Brought to you by Friends of Jones

October 21, 2018

From Dr. Powers
Principal, Jones College Prep.

Dear Jones Families,

It is hard to describe just how successful our annual Open House was last Saturday.

We played host to more than 5,000 prospective students and family members -- 5,059, to be exact! -- a record turnout. We held 11 welcome sessions in the Robin Bennett Theater between 10 a.m and 3:30 p.m. Our visitors toured the campus and I heard nothing but raves about how terrific it was to meet the Jones team, teachers, students and parents. Your enthusiasm for our school came across loud and clear! We couldn't have done it without the hard work and support of our FOJ parents!

I've heard from many parents over the years that their students hadn't made up their minds about which selective enrollment high school to list as their 1st choice -- until they came to the JCP Open House! It's little wonder we've become the #1 choice in the selective enrollment process. This is all due to our amazing Jones Family.

Many thanks for all you do!

Join the Jones community for the 4th Annual Eagle Run

Walk - Run - Fun

                                                    THERE'S STILL TIME!
Join us at the Jones 5K at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 21

Located at Washington Park near the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus, the course follows a flat, scenic route that circles around the park lagoons.

Runners and walkers of all ages and capabilities are welcome and participants will receive official timed results, refreshments and finisher medals. Awards will go to the top three male and female students, faculty and supporter finishers.

>>ALL proceeds go to Jones student organizations and sports teams!!<<

The annual fund continues to gain momentum…
We just added our first “achievement” stripe on the Annual Fund thermometer in the lobby! With a goal of $250,000 and 100% participation, we need EVERYONE to join us.
No amount is too small to make a difference.

Wondering why you should participate?
Here are the TOP 5 Reasons:
  • 5) There is a significant gap between funding from the state and what it takes to provide this excellent education.
  • 4) You don’t pay tuition!
  • 3) Our kids get into AMAZING colleges and universities and are well prepared for their next life chapter.
  • 2) The Class of 2018 earned approximately $65 million in scholarship dollars.
  • 1) Annual fund dollars benefit every Jones student.

Make your gift today online through FOJ Access HERE
or send a check made payable to Friends of Jones.

If you’ve already made your contribution, THANK YOU!
We’re looking forward to updating our donor list with many new names.

Thank You to all who volunteered for the Jones Selective Enrollment Open House
Saturday, Oc 13

Thank you to all our Open House volunteers!!!
More than 5000 guests attended, making the event a huge success. Our Jones staff, students and parent volunteers made a great impression. Many guests wanted to apply to Jones before they left because they were so amazed by our school community.

All day long, our head honchos set n incredible pace. They chatted up visitors,
handed out brochures and got into the thick of the action.
To all who were involved, your Jones pride shined in your hard work and hospitality.

Freshman Library Orientation Sessions
All 16 freshman ac lab groups (homerooms) were given a library orientation session during the first several weeks of school. By providing freshmen with info about the library's resources, services, and policies, we've realized an enormously positive impact on students and for the library program. Many thanks to the FOJ Parent Library Volunteers for the extra support they provided during those weeks.

Freshman parents: Please ask your students what they learned about the library program.

Great Young Adult Titles!
The annual Abraham Lincoln Award is given to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by Illinois students in grades 9-12. Sponsored by AISLE, the award seeks to encourage high school students to read for personal satisfaction, learn about authors of young adult and adult books, and become lifelong readers.

Click here to browse the slideshow of the 20 nominated books or access the slideshow on the books page of the library website.

Also, be sure to visit the home page of the JCP library website. There, you can check out the 23 titles on the JCP Library’s African American Racial Justice Booklist.
