The Quote

“I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.”
~ Vincent Van Gogh

Pictured: Van Gogh’s iconic The Starry Night painted in 1889 while he was in an asylum in Saint-Rémy.

The Complement to the Painting

Dutch Artist Dan Roosegaarde paid a fascinating tribute to Van Gogh’s Starry Night by creating a bike path in Eindhoven, a town where Van Gogh lived for about three years of his short life (1853 – 1890) and used as a backdrop for his paintings.  It was also a town he visited often to buy paint and give art lessons.

Roosegaarde’s art is best seen at night, where the half-mile path is lit by thousands of twinkling blue and green lights creating a beautiful night sky on the ground. The nighttime light comes from embedded LED lights powered by a nearby solar array that charges during the day, plus a light-collecting paint. See our Kiosk of Resources to learn more.

The Quirky Fact

“One of the most poetic facts I know about the universe is that essentially every atom in your body was once inside a star that exploded. Moreover, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than did those in your right hand. We are all, literally, star children, and our bodies made of stardust.”
~ Lawrence M. Krauss, A Universe from Nothing

The Quiz
In this mini-quiz, excerpted from a larger exercise, we have chosen one quotation from four stellar people who, in an unusual alignment of the stars, share the same birthday – January 17. They are:
  1. Benjamin Franklin, who was born in 1706, and rose for 84 stellar years
  2. The sparkling former First Lady Michelle Obama (born in 1964)
  3. Boxer/activist Mohammad Ali (born in 1942) who dazzled us until 2013
  4. And the actor with a voice that commands the heavens, James Earl Jones (born in 1931).
Can you guess who said what? Answers are at the end of the document.
  1. Choose people who lift you up. ___
  2. There never was a good war or a bad peace. ___
  3. When I read great literature, great drama, speeches, or sermons, I feel that the human mind has not achieved anything greater than the ability to share feelings and thoughts through language. ___
  4. The man who has no imagination has no wings. ___
