Message from the President

Informing Local Leaders

Dear JLT Friends, Investors and Community Leaders,

Last month, I recapped many of the outstanding works-of-service our Members achieved on behalf of the Big Bend, our community and signature partners. This list continues to grow and although the New Year marks the beginning of a significant transition period within our League, I could not be more excited for the next 5 months.

This month, dozens of uniquely talented volunteers will interview for leadership positions within JLT. These women, whether they know it or not, will inherit 60+ years of community service, legacy projects, and a renewed sense of service for the Big Bend.

In February, JLT Members will vote on our second Jill Pope Community Partner that will directly benefit from our League’s service and resources. To learn more about our commitment to local organizations, please contact projectresearchdevelopment@jltallahassee.org

In March, our Members will execute Mighty Meals, a JLT signature project alleviating food insecurity during Spring Break. Each “Mighty Meals Box” distributed through our partnership with the Second Harvest of the Big Bend and Leon County Schools contains enough food to feed a family of four three nutritious meals for the seven days of Spring Break. The box also includes community resources, if donated, and a unique cookbook to help families craft nutritious meals with the contents of the box. Want to know how you can help? Contact us at mightymeals@jltallahassee.org. We need books, specific food items, and financial donations.

Additionally, we plan to unveil our soon-to-be-commissioned community mural during Women’s History Month. If you have specific interest or expertise that might assist us with the planning, design and execution of this project, please email me at president@jltallahassee.org. We are formulating a small advisory council of community members that will meet virtually, no more than 5 times, over the next 100 days.

April is when prospective New Members will attend information sessions to learn more about JLT and the application process!

By May, more than 100 JLT Members will have completed one or more of the three training tracks offered by our Leadership & Development Committee: Civic Engagement, Leadership Development, and Civic Advocacy.

Now do you understand why I am giddy about what’s to come?

Happy New Year,

Samantha Sexton

What Members are Saying

“This year, I am most looking forward to cheering my friends on into leadership roles. I am surrounded by so many talented, driven, and caring women-leaders and I want them sharing those qualities!” Justine Hicks, joined 2015

“In 2021, I'm looking forward to volunteering my time, learning new leadership skills and building relationships.” Heather Pepe, joined 2020

“Two years ago during some of the toughest times in my life, I made a commitment to myself that I would live a purpose filled life. That I would do things that positively impact the lives of others. That idea of being positively impactful is at the core of what we do in Junior League. We are pouring into communities that need the most love and the most support. We are stepping up to meet needs for communities that sometimes might not otherwise have the resources they need. I can’t think of a better way to carry out my commitment of living a purpose filled life than by supporting JLT” Vicki Bradley, joined 2020

“I support the Junior League of Tallahassee with my time and resources because I have seen first hand how our signature projects work to address the basic needs of the most vulnerable in our community.” Becca Piers, joined 2015

JLT Celebrates the Holidays at HOPE Community

JLT created holiday magic at HOPE Community this December. Volunteers decked the halls at HOPE with festive decorations, wrapped 150 gifts for the children staying at HOPE Community, and distributed gifts during the annual Christmas Eve festivities. Thank you to the many wonderful volunteers who helped make the holidays special for the children and families at HOPE Community.

To learn more about the JLT-HOPE partnership, please see JLT's latest article in Tallahassee Magazine and the video interviews with JLT volunteers and past committee chairs.

Volunteer Projects

Done in a Day Brings Holiday Cheer to Pediatria

JLT brought some holly jolly to the children and families at Pediatria this holiday season by hosting a virtual Santa Claus at this year’s Pediatria Holiday party! JLT volunteers coordinated a gift wrapping shift in advance to surprise the children in attendance with toys to celebrate the holidays.  Pediatria is a HealthCenter that provides health care services for medically complex children across a comprehensive continuum of care. JLT is proud to continue to support this partner through our Done in a Day committee.

JLT Hosts an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at CCYS

JLT members coordinated a fun night of holiday crafting for the children at CCYS’ emergency shelter. Participating children had the opportunity to use their creativity and design their own ugly sweater for the holidays!

Community Partnerships & Donations

Sponsorships

To aid us in our mission of improving the lives of children and families in the Tallahassee area, JLT relies on the generosity of sponsorships and donations to enhance our community impact. When an organization financially supports the League, we support the organization in return by valuable recognition and exposure to both our members and the general public through online and in-person channels. The League consistently fosters strong partnerships with our sponsors, and we would love to work with you or your organization next!

To learn more about how you can become a JLT Sponsor, please click here to review our sponsorship or email Samantha Ferrin at sponsorship@jltallahassee.org for more information.
