Message from the President

Informing Local Leaders

Dear Community Leaders, Donors and Friends of JLT,

If you flipped the calendar from August to September and thought “wow, how has this year flown by,” you are not alone. I, too, am baffled by the passing time and fall holiday decor lining the aisles of our favorite stores. However, the ladies of JLT have been busy volunteering almost 2,000 hours this summer, executing postponed fundraisers and preparing our calendars for the dozens of volunteer and training opportunities we will offer our Members and community this coming year.

Below you will read about this month’s upcoming events and how you can continue to support our mission through partnerships. One important thing to note, and possibly even add to your browser’s favorite list is JLT’s Done in a Day online application. Done in a Day is a series of concentrated projects that provide volunteer mobilization and funding for community-based events on a short-term basis. The committee partners with other non-profit organizations to help execute community projects that have a significant impact in the Tallahassee area. If you have a short-term volunteer need that ties in with the Junior League of Tallahassee’s mission, do not hesitate to submit your application.

Be the one,

Samantha Sexton

Fundraiser Update

2020 JLT Golf Tournament

Last Friday, The Junior League of Tallahassee successfully pulled off another charity golf classic.  With Covid-19 complications affecting the initial date, the tournament had been rescheduled twice but finally was able to take place on Friday, August 28th. The 2019-2020 Golf Tournament committee had been working for the last 9 months to make sure this golf tournament turned out quite near to perfect, and with added help from the new 2020-2021 Golf committee: it did.

With support from friends, family, past and present league members and local community and league sponsors we were able to sell out all of the hole sponsorships, sell 2 silver and one gold sponsorships and for the first time ever, a Signature Sponsorship, from Suskey Consulting.  Not only did we get to enjoy the outdoors at the wonderful Southwood Golf Club, but with each second, we were raising funds to give back to the Tallahassee community. We would like to thank our golf tournament committee for working so incredibly hard to make this happen, and the Tallahassee community for supporting the tournament these past 4 years.

Not only was our fourth charity golf tournament a huge success by the incredible number of participants, sponsors who donated or showed up to play but we are so proud to announce that this Junior League of Tallahassee Golf Classic raised $14,000 for JLT’s Community Projects. Thank you to all our participants and supporters who helped make the day a success, and who have helped to make a difference in our community!! We hope to see you on the green next year at Southwood on March 25th for our 5th Annual JLT Golf Classic!

Training Our Volunteers

Certificate Programs

A core tenant of the mission of JLT is training our volunteers.  Last year, we launched new certificate programs to ensure our members have the skills they need to serve the community both through the League and through other civic organizations.  This year, we will offer three certificate programs: Civic Engagement, Leadership Development, and Public Affairs.  Civic Engagement focuses on the core aspects of civic leadership: Intrinsic Motivation, Public Speaking, Time Management & Prioritization, Fundraising, and Accountability.  Our Leadership Development track provides an introduction to leadership and lays the foundation for future leadership roles through: The Four Pillars of Leadership Success,  Authentic Leadership & Vulnerability, Motivation, Adaptability & Change Management, and Emotional Intelligence. Finally, our Public Affairs track deepens our understanding of our community impact and the political process by means of: Messaging & Platform Development, Non-profit Advocacy, Community Partner Showcase, and Advocating for Statewide Issues.  Each track spans the entire league year.  Members register for the certificate track and complete their study in addition to community volunteer hours. Those who successfully complete their coursework are presented with a certificate and honored in a graduation ceremony at our annual May Celebration.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Growth Club

In September as part of DEI's Growth Club, league members will read and discuss Mikki Kendall's most recent book Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot. In her searing collection of essays, the author takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women. Drawing on her own experiences with hunger, violence, and hypersexualization, along with incisive commentary on politics, pop culture, the stigma of mental health, and more, Hood Feminism delivers an irrefutable indictment of a movement in flux.

Local Partnership

Kentucky Derby Share Event

As a part of a year-long partnership with Governors Club, the JLT has been selected as the beneficiary of a portion of ticket sales from the Club's annual Kentucky Derby Share Event as well as the proceeds from the Silent Auction. Attendees will be able to socially distance themselves in the Club's ample indoor space and watch the "Run for the Roses" outdoors on the covered balcony. JLT is excited to kick off the partnership with Governors Club while donning Derby Hats, enjoying derby fare, and toasting mint juleps!

Community Impact

2020 Teen Board

This year we are kicking off our annual Teen Board program. This program offers local high school juniors and seniors a foundation of service and leadership. The JLT Teen Board provides the opportunity for community involvement and to enhance leadership, advocacy, and fundraising skills.Members will receive training from JLT members and community leaders and will have the benefit of interacting with other young women their age from across the community.

Teen Board members will gain a better understanding of the impact JLT has on the Tallahassee community while earning needed volunteer hours for college and scholarship applications. In addition to providing service to the community, the members of the Teen Board benefit from training on leadership, self-esteem, living an active lifestyle, professionalism, and more. This year we have nine members on our Teen Board and their kick-off retreat is scheduled for September 26th. We are very excited to welcome these young women and we can't wait to see the awesome things they do in our community!

Community Partnerships & Donations

Sponsorships

To aid us in our mission of improving the lives of children and families in the Tallahassee area, JLT relies on the generosity of sponsorships and donations to enhance our community impact. When an organization financially supports the League, we support the organization in return by valuable recognition and exposure to both our members and the general public through online and in-person channels. The League consistently fosters strong partnerships with our sponsors, and we would love to work with you or your organization next!
