May 2022 Newsletter

Message from the President

Dear Community Leaders, Friends, and Supporters,

As I embark on my last month serving in this honorable role, I am overwhelmed with immense gratitude as I am reminded of the great work our members and leaders have not only envisioned but put to #MassiveAction this year. They called upon our trusted advisors and partners and leaned into their intuition and dedication to execute successful milestone projects like the 25th anniversary of the Kids’ Boutique Back-to-School Shopping event and the 3rd Annual Mighty Meals event where we served a record number of Leon County families.

I look forward to our members' personal recruitment efforts based on their memorable service and taking what they have learned with the League to springboard to other nonprofits as leaders in our community. In a few short weeks, we will formally conclude the 2021-2022 League year with a celebration of this year's accomplishments and the formal launching of our updated branding.

I am excited to introduce you and warmly transfer this monthly column to the incoming President of the Junior League of Tallahassee (JLT), Becca Piers. I look forward to our organization’s continued growth and impact under her leadership. It has been a joy and a gift to work with her and the incoming President Elect, Carla Juarez, this past year. JLT is in excellent hands under Becca’s steady, thoughtful, and experienced leadership. I look forward to many great things under her stewardship.

Lastly, I am incredibly grateful for your continued support and interest in the Junior League of Tallahassee. Our community’s investment in the JLT mission allows us, year after year, to serve more children and their families through Kids’ Boutique and Mighty Meals, partner with new signature partners, and strategically invest in the training and development of our volunteer leaders for the betterment of Tallahassee.

May you always strive to create #MassiveAction.

Until next time,
Katie Britt Williams
2021-2022 JLT President

Hoppy Easter at HOPE Community

In April, JLT volunteers assisted with Big Bend Homeless Coalition's Annual Easter Festival. Members hid 1,500+ eggs, facilitated the egg hunt and outdoor games, handed out picture books, and had fun coloring with the kids. Everyone collected plenty of eggs and won lots of candy prizes.

HOPE Community provides emergency shelter to families, including 100-120 children each night. Want to become a Champion for HOPE and support Tallahassee's local family shelter? A pledge of $50 per month ($600 annually) provides a safe and temporary home to families.

A fresh coat for a fresh start

JLT volunteers are working hard at the Capital City Youth Services (CCYS) campus. Members are repainting the bedrooms so that residents can have a relaxing and calming space in which to sleep and unwind from the day. Many thanks to our CCYS Chairs Ashley Drayer and Vicki Bradley and their committee for all their hard work making CCYS a welcoming place for the youth in our community.

Since 1993, CCYS has worked with homeless, runaway, and at-risk youth to alleviate issues and strengthen families. Learn more about JLT’s partnership with CCYS here.

Place your bets on...Rich Strike!

It’s the greatest two minutes in sports! League Members enjoyed sipping Mint Juleps and Oaks Lily cocktails and watching the 2022 Kentucky Derby at the Governors Club. Many thanks to the Governors Club for selecting the Junior League of Tallahassee as the beneficiary for their annual Kentucky Derby party and inviting JLT members (and friends) to join the fun.

Enjoying Spring and Great Company
Past Presidents of the Junior League of Tallahassee gathered for the annual Past Presidents’ Party to enjoy good conversation and updates about the League. Many thanks to Immediate Past President, Samantha Sexton Greer, and our Arrangements Chairs, Emily Hetherington and Stephanie Cuello, for hosting such a wonderful event. And to our fabulous past presidents who continue to serve as a valuable source of support and inspiration.
Sparking Joy at HOPE Community

JLT volunteers have been diligently working on moving and reorganizing the donation storage at Big Bend Homeless Coalition’s HOPE Community. Members have built a new shelving system and are currently working to label and organize donations into the new space. At the end of this project, donations will be more readily accessible for clients and staff, and staff will be able to easily see when items are low.

If you would like to donate items to Big Bend Homeless Coalition, check out their Amazon wishlist and have donations shipped directly to the campus.

JLT Sustainers Connection

Sustaining Members of the Junior League of Tallahassee gathered for lunch and friendly conversation at Lively Café. Our Sustaining Members are a testament to the lifelong, meaningful friendships members experience through their involvement with the League. We are thankful for our sustainers who continue to serve as mentors to our active members.
