Ontario is making it easier to start a career in the skilled trades with the passage of Bill 288The Ontario government has passed Bill 288, the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021, which will modernize the skilled trades and apprenticeship system. Under the new legislation, a new Crown agency called Skilled Trades Ontario will replace the Ontario College of Trades and, at maturity, will allow apprentices, journeypersons and employers to obtain services in one central place and lead the promotion, research and development of apprenticeship programs. Ministry announces investments in various Skills Development Fund initiativesFrom mid-May to mid-June, the Ministry announced more than $20 million in funding for nine Skills Development Fund projects. New regulation to streamline reporting requirementsA new regulation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) will come into effect on July 1: Ontario Regulation 420 / 21 – Notices and Reports under Sections 51 to 53.1 of the Act – Fatalities, Critical Injuries, Occupational Illnesses and Other Incidents. The new regulation incorporates the critical injury definition and streamlines reporting requirements into a single regulation that applies to all workplaces covered under the OHSA. Learn more |

Amendments to the Industrial Establishments regulationThe Industrial Establishments regulation (Regulation 851) under the OHSA has been amended to streamline and clarify pre-start health and safety review requirements while maintaining existing worker health and safety protections. Occupational exposure limit consultation extended to July 2The Ministry is consulting on new or revised occupational exposure limits (OELs) based on the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists recommendations for 2018 and 2019. It is also consulting on other potential changes related to occupational health, including changes to the OELs for silica and hydrogen sulfide. The deadline for comments has been extended to July 2, 2021. Learn more |
