Welcome to Noteworthy

Watching summer slip away is bittersweet: the early morning sunrises, lazy afternoons and warm summer evenings are blissful. But that cool breeze on a hot August day signals a gradual transition towards autumn. It's a time of new beginnings and renewed energy. As much as we're enjoying lounging in our back yard on Friday nights, we're excited at the prospect of a new season of live music and other creative, fun endeavors.

Our aim is to maintain a more regular connection with you throughout the year. We hope we can do so by bringing you some interesting content with which to augment our newsletter: profiles of the artists, artisans, performers and suppliers of all things local. We're also working on an expanded customer loyalty program and bring you advance notice of special promotions, new arrivals and additions to our ever-changing collection of merchandise.

Whether you're in the neighborhood or simply keeping tabs on our comings and goings, we always look forward to your visits. We hope our newsletter will inspire you to come out and enjoy the local flavor and hospitality of Empourium - see you soon!

This month BBVE welcomes Susan Joan Geddes, a full-time painter living and working in Victoria. Susan paints both "en plein air" and from her imagination. Painting through intuition and guidance, her landscapes are a compilation of the places she's visited throughout Canada and beyond.
"I love to abstract the ordinary." says Geddes. "I enjoy colour and texture, and the possibilities that a blank canvas presents."
Her works have been featured in exhibitions and galleries internationally and from coast to coast in Canada. Earlier this year her art was part of group show at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Susan has also donated her art to both the IWK Children's Hospital in Halifax and to Calgary's Children's Hospital.
"I have a huge desire to give back and I exhibit my paintings in public places related to healing."
Susan's show & sale continues at the BBVE Gallery throughout the month of August and then she'll be the artist in residence at Victoria's Ocean Pointe Resort in September.
A selection of Susan's art cards are also available for purchase at Empourium.
WORTH MENTIONING: we're excited to now offer Mount Royal Bagels! If you've ever had them (they've been in Victoria for over a quarter-century), we needn't say more. If you haven't, you're in for a treat. These are the real deal: boiled, then baked - chewy and delicious! We'll be carrying plain, multi grain and cinnamon varieties. We're also looking forward to enhancing your bagel experience with flavored cream cheeses - and watch for lunch bagel specials too!
Watch this space for new menu items, foods and condiments, plus seasonal offerings and recipes!

Singer/songwriter Jessica Heine (Hi-na) charms audiences with her songwriting and dynamic voice. Recently signed to the folk recording label Fallen Tree Records, she's expanding her following through appearances this summer at the Edmonton, Canmore and Jasper folk festivals. Jessica released a new album this year entitled Goodbye Party.

A fine arts graduate with a degree in vocal performance, she revels in classical voice but her real passion is folk music and storytelling. "“I love classical singing in its own context but I learned to separate those two styles.”

Her songs have an optimism that showcases a hopeful strength of spirit that Heine breathes not only into her music, but her life as well. She says her songs fall somewhere in between fiction and non-fiction but “they feel very real” and expressing them was therapeutic. Heine can’t quite explain the recurring seafaring references that crop up in her songs. “I’ve never been sailing but I think the metaphor of water, or sinking or swimming, speaks to me.”

Along with her performance at BBVE, perhaps she'll have the opportunity to get out on the waters around Brentwood Bay - no doubt it would be an experience that could only deepen her connection with the west coast.

Appearing with Jessica is Former Canadian Idol finalist and award winning multi-instrumentalist, Andrew B. Sloniowski. Otherwise known as Dam Andrewhe played a solo show at BBVE earlier this year, winning over the ears, heartstrings, and tear-ducts of audiences with a winning mixture of musical intuition, comedic insight, and cunning wordcraft.

Tickets for this house concert are $25 in advance from the cafe or by calling 778-351-0178 during business hours.

These days Jeff Stevenson calls Brentwood Bay home but was a contributor to the vibrant British music scene of the late 60s and early 70s, writing several commercially successful pop tunes whose carefully crafted hooks and melodies will leave you wondering whether he penned tunes for any of the artists he now features in his extensive repertoire: Cat Stevens, Eric Burden, James Taylor and many others.

Songwriters circles are an opportunity for musicians to collaborate musically with other songwriters in a live, interactive setting. It's rewarding and exciting to hear how the artists add their unique nuance to one another's compositions. Tonight's circle will be shared by three local musicians of exceptional talent:
Daniel Cook is a songwriter of extraordinary sensitivity and a frequent collaborator with other talented musicians, several of whom also constitute his excellent backup band, The Radiators
Lisa Bosman is well known to our audience for her solo performances at BBVE. She also leads vocal workshops, which comes as no surprise to anyone who's had the pleasure of listening to her outstanding contralto tones.
Ray Spencer is the driving force behind many local songwriter circles and is a seasoned folk-roots composer and performer on south Vancouver Island music scene. He's also one-third of Clancy's Front Porch, who will play BBVE later this season. Ray recently released the album Two Way Traffic One Lane Road.

Seats will fill up quickly for this special evening. Drop by the cafe or call us at 778-351-0178 during business hours to save your place around the circle!

By day, Robbie Hancock is a music composer of note with a roster of heavyweight TV and film clients like HBO and Discovery Channel. By night, he's a songwriter with the clarity and nuance of a folk master. Earlier this year Robbie released his fifth album: The Shape I'm In
