Goldens and Labs are two of the most popular breeds and make both wonderful family pets and working dogs. They are fun dogs, energetic, relatively easy to train, and a good choice for many families. Despite these positive traits, they can present some challenges. Most have so much energy they need a lot of exercise. They love to jump up on people when greeting them. Many are notorious leash pullers. While they may not be dangerous to other animals, they sure like to chase them and once on the chase they may be hard to get them to come back! And your arm might fall off while throwing them a ball or toy to retrieve - they don't tire easily.

What you should be aiming for is a dog who learns basic good manners (sit, come, stay), a strong recall, and ways to keep them entertained and well exercised.  Here are some ideas:

The Toolbox for Building a Great Family Dog by Terry Ryan.
My Dog Pulls - What Do I Do? by Turid Rugaas.
Rocket Recall DVD by Simone Mueller and Really Reliable Recall DVD featuring Leslie Nelson.
From Birdbrained to Brilliant - Training the Sporting Dog to be Great Companion by Dawn Antoniak Mitchell.
Play Together Stay Together by Karen London and Patricia McConnell.
Hunting Together! Harnessing Predatory Chasing in Family Dogs by Simone Mueller.

Next week will discuss training your retriever to do what they were bred to do out in the field!
