As many of our long-time customers know, we get very excited about new books we publish, and our new Service Dog book by Jennifer Cattet is no exception. Especially when it flies off the shelves....  That is the good news, the bad news is we can run out unexpectedly and then have to wait for the printer to get us more. That is what happened here but now we are fully stocked again. So here is what we sent out a couple weeks ago describing the new book in case you missed it:

Dogwise Publishing is very pleased to announce the release of Selecting and Training Your Service Dog - How to Succeed in Public Access Work by Jennifer Cattet, PH.D. Jennifer has worked on training service dogs for many years through her Medical Mutts business both in America and Europe. As we worked with her to outline the manuscript, we agreed with her suggestion that the book focus on selecting and training service dogs to work successfully out in public. We chose this because, frankly, this is a somewhat controversial issue because the laws and regulations regarding service dogs in public don't require 'service' dogs to be certified or licensed, and the ability of a person to claim his or her dog is a service dog cannot be effectively challenged in pubic.

Because of these issues, Jennifer has written the book so that owners of service dogs can meet the criteria set for Public Access Training by Assistance Dogs International. While no certification is granted, at least the owner knows that his or her dog will have the best chance to be able to do all the things necessary for both the owner and the people and businesses they encounter. But the book goes way beyond just training exercises, because selecting the right dog for training, be it a puppy or an adopted shelter dog, will increase your chances of success. As Jennifer says, "service dogs are both born and made" meaning you want to choose a breed or a type of dog with the right drives and temperament so that all the efforts that go into testing candidates, socializing, and reward-based training does not go to waste. And finally, your service dog will help give service dogs a good name rather what happens out in public all too often.
