*NEW COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS FOR LONDON*
The Government has now introduced new measures for London, which will move into tier 2 restrictions from midnight tomorrow.
This will mean that there will be a ban on households mixing indoors, including at pubs and restaurants.
The rule of six still applies for households mixing outdoors.
However, informal bubbles will be allowed where under 14s need to be looked after by grandparents or other family members.
Millions of people across the country have faced greater restrictions for months.
No one wants to see more restrictions, but they are absolutely necessary to protect us all.
While the Covid-19 rate in Croydon is not as high as other boroughs, with a latest weekly case rate of 72.9 per 100k population, the rate is rising across London.
Cases are doubling on average every 8 days across the capital and ITU beds are at nearly 70% capacity.
The rising case rate underlines how important it is that the Government gets a grip on the failing test and trace system.
Labour is calling for a short two to three week national circuit breaker, which could save thousands of lives, drive the virus down to manageable levels, and give the Government more time to sort out test and trace.
As we face more restrictions, the Government must provide more financial support for our businesses, workers and public services.
Tier 2 restrictions will mean that many businesses will be open but without the customers they need to survive.
The Government's failure to act will cost us much more in the long run. A short circuit breaker will be tough, but it is necessary to protect lives and livelihoods ahead of a bleak winter.
In these difficult times, I urge you all to be vigilant and follow the rules to do what we can to get this virus under control and save lives.
