The easy (read fun) way to start a new project is to dive right in, open Sketch or Sublime Text and start creating. We’ve all been there, but starting with solutions will likely come back to bite you later.

Instead, the first step when starting a new project should always be to understand the problem you’re trying to solve. For the past couple of years I've been using a simple 4 step process to do just that.
  1. Identify your target audience
  2. Make contact
  3. Ask open questions
  4. Create job stories
User research doesn't have to be painful or even particularly time-consuming but it does need to be intentional. You can read the full post about understanding customer problems on my blog.
