Dear Niwot Elementary Families:

It was another great week at Niwot Elementary. There was a lot of great learning and growing taking place. I am thrilled to see how the students, staff and families are jumping right into this school year and embracing every moment.

Ask your child about the first safety drill they participated in on Friday. We had an evacuation (fire) drill and they did outstanding. As a a reminder, we do an evacuation drill every month, where all of the other drills take place twice a year. We take safety very seriously and it was great to see the students do such an outstanding job for the very first drill this school year.

This past week we hosted 1st grade and 5th grade families to their Back to School nights. We had great turnouts for both!  Next week we welcome 4th grade (Monday), 2nd grade and 3rd grade (Wednesday), and Kindergarten (Thursday). Thank you, in advance, for attending these important meetings so you can learn how to best support your child and how we can begin our partnership with you.

Students worked extremely hard this past week on their iReady Reading assessment. Next week they will work on their math assessment.  These are important assessments that help us get a baseline with where your child is at in reading and math. We do understand that this is only one data point and we take other factors into account as well.

Another important reminder to purchase the iPad insurance.  The important information is below. Similar to last year, there will be charges for lost or damaged iPads. By taking advantage of iPad insurance, it will help with these possible costs.

In addition, please also make sure you read the important information about the Code of Conduct. Thank you for taking the time, with your child, to review and sign this important document.

We will kick-off All-School Movement this Friday, September 2nd on the upper hill at 9:10am. (after drop-off).  Come and join us as we start the day with movement and fun! We do All-School Movement every Friday, weather permitting.

Here's to a great week ahead. Please let us know how we can support you and your child.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pitz

Meet Mr. Flaherty!

Please welcome our new 4th grade teacher, Sean Flaherty. Mr. Flaherty comes to us with four years of teaching experience where he recently taught one year in 5th grade and 3 years in 4th grade at Soaring Heights K-8. Mr. Flaherty has come full circle as he student taught at Niwot Elementary in 4th grade with Mrs. Yonker in 2018. Mr. Flaherty was also a SVVS Teacher of the Year finalist last year. In his spare time he enjoys skateboarding, hiking, traveling and spending time with his wife. He is super excited to be back at Niwot Elementary and we are thrilled to have him back as well.

Gifted and Talented Referrals

Each year, schools in St. Vrain Valley School District complete a process to identify students who demonstrate exceptional ability or performance in one or more academic areas and may, therefore, qualify for Gifted/Talented educational services. These students usually perform at least two years above grade level in their strength area(s), and they require additional academic challenges in order to support their continued educational growth and progress.  In addition, they usually demonstrate characteristics of unique creativity and high motivation in their strength areas.

Referrals are open through the month of September and will close on the last day of the month. Referrals after that date will be addressed on a case by case basis. Completing a referral guarantees a review of the student profile to determine if testing is recommended for the student. The process for identification requires a body of evidence and often takes place throughout the school year.

The process takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

For questions, please contact Audrey Lenger, lenger_audrey@svvsd.org

Dear Niwot Elementary students and families,

Thank you for your partnership and supporting the academic growth, safety, and well-being of our students. Every year, St. Vrain Valley Schools prints an up-to-date version of the Code of Conduct for students and families to review. This important document guides students and school staff on what expectations for school conduct and the consequences for behaviors that fall outside of those expectations. It is important that families review this information every year and acknowledge their receipt and understanding of this document.

To this end, please click the following link to access the Code of Conduct:  https://www.svvsd.org/schools/student-conduct/.  After you have reviewed this information, all families must sign an electronic acknowledgement that they have received, read, and understand the information contained, including the Annual Notification to Parents/Guardians; Behavioral Code of Conduct; Rights and Responsibilities of Students and Parents; and Board of Education Policies book. To sign your electronic acknowledgement, please follow the directions at this link: https://tech.svvsd.org/support/2020/04/21/ic-parent-permissions/

Again, thank you for your continued partnership and support. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly at 303-652-2828.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pitz

100 Mile Club is back!

We would love students to join us in Niwot Elementary's 100 Mile Club this year!  100 Mile Club starts Monday, September 12, and meets every Monday, Thursday, and Friday before school from 8:20-8:50 AM.  Students run, jog, or walk on our upper grass field.  Each lap is tracked and miles are displayed on our club bulletin board in the hallway.  Students are welcome to participate in any or all of the 3 days each week.  Our club meets throughout the year until the end of April.

This is a great before school activity that gets students exercising with their friends, and motivates them to set mileage goals throughout the year!

If interested, please fill out the online registration form that includes a $20 one time fee and a Return to Activities Release Form.

100 Mile Club FAQS

Does my child have to come to every practice?

No, students come when they want.  Some attend every practice, some only come once a week.

Will a meeting time ever get cancelled?

If there is a weather related late start or school cancellation, the club will not meet.

What happens if it's raining, snowing, or freezing outside?

The club will meet inside the school and students will walk a course in the hallways to receive 1 mile.

Where does the 100 Mile Club meet?

On our upper grass field.  A sign will be posted on the front doors if inside due to weather.

Can parents/guardians participate and/or volunteer to help?

Absolutely!  We encourage parents to run with their child and we also have many volunteer opportunities available!  Parents, please do not fill out the form and pay for yourself.  Only student members need to pay.

Do you have to run?

All we ask is that members move around the track.  Some run, jog, walk, skip.

Can my preschooler join the club?

Preschoolers are welcome to join as long as a parent or guardian runs with them.

I hope to see your child up on the field with us! Let's get moving!

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone for working hard to keep students, staff, families and our community safe. Here are the important traffic procedures that are very important we all follow every day: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zMV6N7Oryzk5pqVW7rWVud3qZnHIm47io6jmWLlTgkw/edit?usp=sharing.  An important reminder to not drop students off in the parking lot (unless you are parking and walking in with them), always use the cross walks (do not climb under or over the chains), and pull all the way forward in the Kiss and Catch line.
The federal program funding free breakfast and lunch for all students has ended, so students need to now purchase these. Breakfast is $2.50 and school lunch, which includes milk, is $3.75 for students. It is $0.75 for any additional milk.

Families are encouraged to apply online  for free and reduced lunch. The application from previous years does not carry over to this year. Approval for this program not only provides reduced or free prices for lunch, but also reduces fees for iPad insurance, district sports, and clubs. If you prefer to access the application in a language other than English, you can do so in the top right corner.

Welcome back families and students! We are so excited to have everyone back! We are here to support you and your student(s).  If your child is having a hard time with the transition back to school please do not hesitate to reach out to the counseling program Isabelle Goulder (Mrs. Izzy - Mental Health Interventionist) and Bethany Zeranski (Mrs. Zeranski - School Counselor), or visit our counseling website for additional resources.

Counselors schedules are both part time so please allow up to 48 hours for a response. If you have a more urgent concern please also contact your student’s teacher and/or the office.

Isabelle - Tuesday, Thursday, and Wednesday afternoons

Bethany - Mondays, Fridays, and Wednesday mornings
