Moving Forward!

At it's June 26th meeting, the AHS Building Committee voted 15-1 to approve design option 3a and send it to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) for approval.  The committee values the energy and feedback from the community to help make this milestone decision.

Preferred Design Concept Chosen

Arlington's preferred design concept is 3a, a variation of option 3 that moves the auditorium to the front of the facility.  This change was made based on feedback from the community and the building committee.

The preliminary design concept was chosen based on a variety of factors including cost, educational fit, layout, sustainability, construction timeline, and disruption to students. Note the chosen design at this point in the process represents “massing” relationships. It is not the final design of the building, which will be refined during the next phase of the project.

Community Feedback Summary

Earlier this month, the building committee solicited community feedback on each of the preliminary design concepts as well as general design aspects.  Over 1,200 residents submitted their feedback.
  • Respondents felt slightly positive about Option 1 and Option 3, neutral about Option 2 and negative about Option 4
  • There is a strong desire for keeping at least some of the front green of the High School
  • Most respondents voiced a desire for a historic and classic New England architectural look, whether in a renovated or new building

Sustainability at the New AHS

Based on Arlington’s proven commitment to reduce our energy consumption and our environmental impact, it should come as no surprise that there is keen interest in building a new high school that is sustainable.

The Town of Arlington has been invited into the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process for the renovation/construction of Arlington High School. Acceptance to the MSBA program does not guarantee state funding.  The MSBA approval process must be completed successfully for the state, via the MSBA, to provide significant financial assistance to the project. Local funding must also be assured through passage of a debt exclusion.
