Demand Accountability for Another Death
Sidney Richardson, a black veteran with PTSD, makes the 139th death by police in the United States this year. You read that right!
According to the news, Richardson was wielding a machete and was allegedly threatening his 17 year old cousin when they were called. Upon their arrival, they allege, they commanded him to put down his weapon, attempted to tase him but failed and then, resultant, they fired their guns--ending his life.
We understand that wielding a machete at someone is a dangerous thing to do and is the wrong thing to do--however, de-escalation must become the priority of all police departments.
On August 8, Sadie and I stood outside Tampa Police Department and issued demands to the City to change their policing policies, including their Use of Force policies. At this time, we do not know if body camera footage is available for this case.
CALL THE MAYOR'S OFFICE AND DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY AND A PROPER INVESTIGATION. WE WANT DE-ESCALATION, NOT EXECUTION!
