Admiral Boland Way Mural Project
We are proud to announce that local artists Aaron Glasson and Beliz Iristay have been commissioned to create original designs for the Admiral Boland Way Mural Project. This 144’ long rotating mural site is viewed by thousands of travelers each day, bringing color and vibrancy to the airport’s interior roadway.
It’s important to the practice of muralist and sculptor Aaron Glasson to have an extended engagement with an artwork’s site in order to draw inspiration from its ecosystem, people, and history. In developing his design for SAN, he will create 20-30 plein-air paintings onsite at the airport, giving the traveling public the chance to observe his creative process. The first of these onsite engagments is today in Terminal 2 West, from 10am-1pm. Glasson’s finished mural design will be installed in late spring 2020.
About the Artists:
Aaron Glasson is a multi-disciplinary artist from New Zealand currently living in San Diego. Glasson’s work is inspired by the people, history, and environmental conditions of an artwork site. He has completed large-scale permanent and temporary murals around the globe from Denver, Colorado to Delhi, India.
Beliz Iristay’s artistic practice is grounded in her unique experience as a Turkish-American living and working on both sides of the US/Mexico border. She juxtaposes traditional ceramics techniques with modern materials in creating her sculptural and two-dimensional work. Iristay’s mural design will be installed in spring 2021.
