Welcome to the newsletter of the Blue Mountains Australia Supporters of the Camino

Newsletter April  2019
View this email in your browser
Hola Peregrinos and to our supporters who are about to become Pilgrims, heading off on their Camino; or you may have expressed an interest in finding out more about the Camino, hola and welcome to our April newsletter!

We are excited there are so many people who are interested in the Camino, many new visitors local and from afar have attended our Camino Meetups at Glenella.  In February we had a wonderful record of 38 people turn up for the Saturday morning walk and/or Camino Meetup, and in March there were more than 20 people for the Meetup with 7 walking in the morning.

This coming weekend we are equally excited that our long time supporter, David Barrett, is bringing several members from the Central Coast Camino group to Blackheath.  The group of 10 are arriving on Friday 26 April 2019 and are planning an informal combined dinner then walking on Saturday morning and later in the afternoon attending the regular Camino Meetup at Glenella.  We would love to see many of our supporters and pilgrims  come to the weekend of Camino events and to show our visitors some warm Blue Mountains hospitality.

CALL FOR HELP!  If you are able to help in anyway, no matter how small, please contact us by email and let us know.  Perhaps you could provide help include 'leading' walks, do show and tell at a Camino Meetup, bake Santiago tart/s for Meetups, provide vital assistance with the newsletters including contributing articles  and photos for the newsletter and also our facebook page to name a few things that are currently being done by too few people.
We wish for the newsletters to continue but need help and we'd love to hear from you!!

Buen Camino for the Admin Team
Dinner at Blackheath Golf Club, Friday 26 April 2019 @ 6.30pm

Join David Barrett and supporters of the Central Coast Camino group for an informal dinner and get together at Blackheath Golf Club, Cnr Brightlands Ave and Valley Rd, Blackheath this Friday 26 April.  Meet some fellow pilgrims and share your stories and experiences.  The more the merrier!

A table will be booked under David's name so if you could let us know if you intend on coming along so we can ensure enough seats are available - email us here   Otherwise you can still just turn up and pull up a seat.  The food at Birdies Bistro is quite good and Friday special is Lamb Shank with mash and vegetables for $17.00, sounds like excellent value.  They also have their bistro menu to choose from.  Meals and drinks are own expense.
Saturday Walk at 9.00am on 27 April 2019
The proposed route for the April walk is Blackheath to Govetts Leap Lookout and return.  There are a couple of options to take, Popes Glen track and/or Braeside Trail which is approximately 8-9 km circuit taking about 4 hours depending on ability.  There are steps on this route and parts of the track may be wet from recent rain.

Please BYO water, snacks,  sunscreen, hat, rain gear (if forecast - its a great way to check if your particular set of rain gear works!), first aid bits & pieces and sturdy footwear.  If you don't want to walk the whole circuit you can take the option of returning directly to Glenella Guesthouse via Govetts Leap Rd.
Note: There are no shops midway for a caffeine break but bring some lunch if you like, otherwise we will be back in Blackheath in time to buy lunch to eat at Glenella for the 2.00pm Camino Meetup.

Let us know if you intend on walking click hereMeet at Glenella Guesthouse, 56 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath at 8.50am for 9.00am departure.  Then later on, at 2.00pm, there's the usual Camino Meetup.    Hope to see you there, everyone is welcome!
CAMINO MEETUP: Saturday 27 April
2.00 - 4.00pm at Glenella

Camino Meetups are held the 4th Saturday of most months*  from 2.00-4.00pm at Glenella Guesthouse, 56 Govetts Leap Rd, Blackheath.  The next Camino Meetup will be on Saturday 27 April 2019  at 2.00pm.

Come along to meet David Barrett, our long time supporter from the Central Coast Camino group (CCC).  David and nine of the CCC group  members are spending the weekend in Blackheath to explore some of our beautiful Blue Mountains and meet up with our supporters.  This is a great opportunity to meet more pilgrims from around NSW, share stories and experiences.  We hope you can join us!

If you are new to this Camino group, the Camino Meetups are an informal gathering and have proved to be an
informative afternoon, a chance to share all things Camino including your stories and experiences, occasional 'show & tell', for others to learn about the Camino.  If time permits, we occasionally show a short Camino related doco film.
Enjoy the camaraderie!

Check out the Glenella Camino Corner with books and DVDs.  There is a trunk with donated/surplus adventure gear that may be useful for your Camino.  Items by $5.00 donativo unless otherwise marked.  If you have any spare gear you wish to donate, bring them along to a Camino Meetup.

The Australian Friends of the Camino (AFOTC) has the first National Conference being held in Adelaide in October 2019.  There is a great line-up of speakers and entertainers  with their latest coup  being the infamous John Brierley!  He is the keynote speaker on the Sunday morning with plenty of time for questions and guidebook signing.

If you would like to attend the conference, here is the link for information and bookings on the AFOTC website.

Remember you can become a member of AFOTC and get your Australian Pilgrim Credencial from them too -

Last year saw many of our supporters walk the Camino…. is it your turn this year?? Let us know when you are planning to start your Camino and which route and we will put you on the list.

Missing from the On The Way board is Margaret who is walking from Milan to Rome in May.  Bronwen is also walking in May but Camino route unknown.

An update on Ce Jacques who is now passed the half way mark of her Camino Del Norte.  Ce has done extraordinarily well with some days walking almost 50km!!  Reports and photos have been of a very scenic route with some tough days walking on a variety of track surfaces and conditions,  the mountainous  terrain has been a personal challenge but Ce is doing so well, what a champion she is!
