5 Writerly Reasons to Enjoy the Season
by Elza Kinde
Welcome to autumn, a season many of us proudly claim as a personal favorite. Can you feel it? The promise of full pages and witty paragraphs charges the air, much like static from your favorite sweater.
It’s not easy to explain the magic that makes fall oh-so special to writers specifically, but I’ve done some speculating and came up with a few things which I believe add to autumn’s unanimous appeal to the wordsmiths and wisecracks among us.
Pumpkin-Spiced
Having sips and sweets laced with stimulating spices and encountering that seasonal aroma in the air makes it easier than ever to hit that sweet spot — energetic enough to focus, relaxed enough to create. Lighting a cinnamon-scented candle before your writing session, sneaking in a PSL break between word sprints, or getting out a notebook between batches of ginger snaps may be just the trick to spice up your writing routine.
Rustling Leaves
If you listen long enough to the shuffle of dry debris underfoot, you may notice how similar it is to the sound of leafing through a thick novel on a chilly afternoon. Coincidence? I think not. Revisiting your very favorite comfort read is maybe the best way to rekindle a love for all things literary. This is the perfect chance to treat yourself to that restful reading routine you’ve always dreamed of. As the days grow shorter, why not make a little time for yourself?
Fall Colors
Earthy tones are in vogue during this time of year, evoking that sense of hygge and hominess we writerly types generally gravitate toward. Be it chunky knit blankets, stylish leather accessories, or vibrant wall art you finally get to pull out of storage, the colors we surround ourselves with can bring new life and meaning to our writing space. Brown for comfort. Yellow for cheer. Red for energy. Orange for ambition. Gray for peace. Gather what you need for this season of writing and get to work!
Gathering Thoughts
If you’re prone to introspection, symbolism tied to the fall season may be something you’ve already begun to ruminate upon. Looking for change? A hint of mystery? Perhaps you’re craving more time to prepare, or feel totally content to count your blessings. Capture those questions and wild wonderings on the page. As you collect your thoughts, you’re sure to uncover a few hidden gems.
Adventure Awaits
Your ideal autumn may consist of a comfy-cozy wardrobe, piles of extra quilts, and marshmallows afloat in steamy hot cocoa. But there’s plenty of excitement to be had, too. We have traditions to uphold, costumes to create, storms to weather, exams to ace, and surprises aplenty along the way. Maybe you won’t be locked in a study to write by scented candlelight all season long, but you’ll certainly have stories to tell if you’re prepared to see life as another kind of adventure.
