Improved Attendance!

Salem Church Middle School began a Care Package & Home-visit initiative earlier this school year to increase engagement and trust between the school and their families! CIS Site Coordinator, Chloe Carter, led the way by putting together and delivering the packages to students. The package included essentials to support student success and finish out the school year strong. Each bag contains an alarm clock, earbuds, stress ball or fidget item, a laminated class schedule, a magnet with a "who to call list," study tips, a weekly planner, and a notepad. A special shutout and huge thanks goes to Novelis for supporting this initiative!
CIS Volunteer Week

Over the last few years, we have hosted an All-Site Volunteer Day, when community members could support our students and schools by participating in done-in-a-day volunteer projects across our CIS schools. While we had to cancel that day in 2020 due to the pandemic, we were determined to make it happen this year! With a mix of DIY projects that folks could do from home, and a few in-person opportunities, we want to give a huge shout out to all the wonderful people who participated. Whether you crafted, created, purchased, delivered or assembled, your efforts mean so much to us, our students, and teachers. We also want to say thank you to all of our volunteers, who have supported CIS one way or another over the last 27 years! You are such a HUGE part of the work we do to uplift our students. Be sure to follow us on Facebook to see more photos and other highlights!

National Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health Awareness month, which began in 1949 to raise awareness of those suffering from mental health challenges. It's also a time to lessen the stigma around mental illness. A wonderful example of how youth in Chesterfield are raising awareness here locally, is the Chesterfield Youth Citizen Board (YCB) and their social media campaign. Tune into the video above to learn more and check out Chesterfield County's Facebook page, where the YCB's social media campaign posts will be shared!

Roadmap to Re-opening Safely and Meeting All Students’ Needs

The U.S. Department of Education recently published the second volume of their Ed. COVID-19 Handbook. In it is some great research and guidance, including mention of the Communities In Schools model as an effective Integrated Supports Services model (pg 35)! Check out it out!
