The Buzz: April 2018 Newsletter

Spring has sprung! It is such an exciting time of year at The HEAL Project sites because programming is in full swing and our outdoor spaces are buzzing with kids full of energy and curiosity. This month our students are busy preparing garden beds, planting in our farm fields and discovering the magic of what warmer weather and longer days bring to our gardens.
Our Annual Report is here! Check out what we have been up to for the past year.

Thank You Grantors!

We are pleased to announce The HEAL Project has been awarded funds from the following grantors; San Mateo County Office of Sustainability 4Rs (Worm Composting), the Sand Hill Foundation (Strategic Planning and Program Evaluation) and the Atkinson Foundation (Digging Deeper field trip program). We are committed to creating a long lasting impact from this investment that will result in a healthier future for our kids.

Recipe: Stinging Nettle Pesto

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup stinging nettles, blanched

  • ¼ cup fresh mint leaves

  • ¼ cup olive oil

  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese

  • 1 lemon

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • ⅛ cup walnuts

Directions:

  1. Carefully harvest stinging nettles (use gloves!). You can also order stinging nettle paste online or substitute stinging nettles for basil, spinach, or arugula.

  2. If using nettles; blanch nettles to take away stinging properties. Tip: you can drink the water you used to cook the nettles! Nettle tea is a delicious and healthy beverage.

  3. Blend all ingredients until smooth and eat on crackers, or a healthy whole wheat pasta.
