2ND EDITION WAR ROOM KICKSTARTER MAY 28!

2ND EDITION OF WAR ROOM -> MAY 28, 2021

We've set in a launch date for the 2nd edition of WAR ROOM on Kickstarter.   It is Friday May 28, 2021.  We intend to launch our KS preview page earlier in May to gather hype.  Below are some details of expected changes.  Please note: these could change further depending on the level of success.

OVERALL GOAL
The primary goal with the edition is to make modest changes reducing the weight and cost by roughly 10%.  There will be no Jumbo Expansion offered as part of the Kickstarter, but some supplement elements might be available at our webstore.
PRICING
Here is a pricing comparison.  Notice the significant discount for backing on Kickstarter as opposed to waiting for release.
1st edition KS $149 (2017), 1st edition MSRP $240 (2019)
2nd edition KS $137 (2021), 2nd edition MSRP $200 (2022)

UPGRADE FORWARDS OR BACKWARDS
The original 1st edition version will NOT become obsolete in terms of gameplay!   Anything new component-wise will be made available as a supplement at our webstore if there is sufficient demand. Likewise, anything that is lacking from the 2nd Edition will also be made available as a supplement at our webstore if there is sufficient demand.
RULEBOOK
There will be no significant gameplay changes other than the inclusion of an optional quick battle system designed to reduce overall gameplay time significantly.  We will make a YouTube video of how the quick battle system works by May 1st.  We plan to streamline the Soviet-Japanese Pact rules.  More on this later.   We will also clarify any loose ends such as those addressed in the FAQ from the first edition.   We will also likely include the Nano rules.
MORALE BOARD
We introduce a different layout for the Morale Board which uses a Stress Track instead of Stress Tokens.  It is a more cost-effective method (rendering Stress Tokens moot) and avoids the juggling of Stress token stacks, but has no gameplay balance impact... (apart from the 6th tier casualty to stress conversion which can be retrofitted).

LIGHTWEIGHT COMPONENTS
The Morale Board, Battle Board, and Reference will use thinner stock to reduce weight and cost.  We might only include 1 Battle Board. The O&P Pads will use thinner backing and have 30 pages instead of 50.  Replacement O&P Pads (of the original 1st edition) will be available at our webstore.  The outer box will be 1cm shallower and have a slightly different design to avoid confusion with the first Edition.  It will also have a UPC.  We might include a picture on the bottom but only if there is significant retail interest.  (I prefer the austere black.)
UNIT STORAGE BOX
We introduce a new single Unit Storage box which replaces the 4 long rectangle Unit boxes.  While I like the ww2 photo imagery, I felt the Unit Storage box colors were a bit too pastel in the original edition and weren't cohesive with the rest of the aesthetic.  So here's the new Unit Storage Box with 12 compartments and a lid for dice rolling.  It has a "chocolate box" style lift lid for easier opening.  2 original unit storage boxes are shown below for scale reference.  There will be images on the bottom of each compartment for suggested storage reference.  This new storage box will also be available at our webstore.

CHINA FLAG
This has been an extremely touchy issue because the production factory in China could risk closure if it uses the historically accurate flag which is forbidden, b/c it is now the flag of Taiwan.  In the first edition we invented a fake flag (inspired by actual Chinese WW2 medals).  We hoped to work our way back to something resembling a more accurate flag in the 2nd edition, but political tensions are very high (of course! sigh...) and so the flag shown on the new Morale Board may not get used in the 2nd edition.  If that is the case we will have another sticker patch made in the USA.   This affects imagery on numerous components, but doesn't affect gameplay balance.
TERRITORY CARDS
Besides any China flag changes, there is a teensy weensy ERRATA fix affecting the back of 1 card, Sicily.
QUICK BATTLE REFERENCE
If the campaign is going well we will include reference cards for the optional quick battle system.  There will be a video of how this system works with the next bulletin update on May 1st.  In the meantime join the War Room discord channel, if you are keen to try it out early.
DIE-CUT TOKENS
The wooden hotspots will be downgraded to high quality chipboard tokens.  This is to reduce cost.  The medals/CG will be slightly smaller.
ITALY COMMAND PLASTIC
We intend to tweak the color of Italy Commands to a slightly lighter shade of olive (closer to the Nation Storage Box).

CUT FROM 2ND EDITION
Here is a summary of what is cut entirely from the 2nd edition:
  • 7 Capital Stars (used as capital reminders in certain scenarios)
  • All Stress Tokens (1 and 3 denominations) (replaced by redesigned Morale Board with Stress Track)
  • 4 Unit Storage Boxes (replaced by new single Unit Storage Box)
EVERYTHING ELSE
Everything else not already noted above is currently unchanged in the 2nd edition... including the map, the units, the commands, etc.
FEATURE WISHLIST
While we do not plan to have Stretch Goals we do have some "wish-list features" that will depend on the level of funding success.  We prefer NOT to arbitrarily link these to funding levels, but rather we will make this version the best it can be at a good price.
