When I work in clay it feels like I am drawing in three dimensions. When I design something, I make line drawings to establish the sort of direction I would like to investigate. I then make the piece with coils –or strips of clay- from the bottom up. When the shape is completed I focus on the surface. More often than not lines or stripes are involved, whatever direction I choose to go into. I draw, paint or incise every line individually and deliberately. I am still astounded at the unique qualities that emerge with each piece, even after 20 years of this sort of mark-making on my work.
