A bunch of tales I wanted to share with you

A tale I read

Ladders by Richard Garcia

A tale I heard

Actor Lenny Henry on the dearth of people of colour in decision-making roles in TV and film:

"Why do things get made? Who’s in charge? Usually the gatekeepers in charge want to make things about people that look like them, which is a natural thing to do. Which leaves out a whole bunch of other stories. The wider industry needs to think in terms of creating a space where everybody can get a chance to represent, where it’s not just the same type of person who went to the same schools."

A tale I saw

48 Veneer Avenue by Caroline Bird

A tale I wrote

I fell out with a genie
and he gave me tablespoon fingers,
egg cups for eyes
and the back of a felled tree.

As I was allowed only three wishes,
I thought he'd be allowed only
three changes. But he carried on

and gave me sandpaper skin,
dust for hair, boats for feet,
the guts of a toddler,

elephant ears, a toilet belly button,
retired tennis player elbows,
a dandruff beard, cheese string legs

and the self esteem of someone
desperately trying.
