A bunch of tales I wanted to share with you

A tale I read

A tale I heard

Sarah Michelle Gellar on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and gender equality:

"A couple months ago maybe, my son was talking about, he was 6 at the time, and he’s talking about how boys are strong and boys kick butt. And my daughter and my husband instantly go, 'You know girls can do that too,' and he’s like, 'But not the same.'

My husband said, ‘Well, are you sure? Have you ever seen mom?’ And he was like, 'What are you talking about?' My husband Googled a YouTube clip of, like, Buffy’s finest fighting moments, and it was so cute because my son’s eyes got so wide and he said, 'Mama, you could do that?!'"

A tale I wrote

New neighbours are moving in.
A young couple. New clutter
dragged in the front door through the rain.
I want to say Hi but I'm frozen
in modern times.
What if they're killers?
What if it's all an act?
What if they're setting up a drug den,
or an illegal brothel?
They don't look evil. But they're definitely evil.
I stay in the kitchen, staring,
stood back far enough from the window that
they can't see me. But I can see them.
Oh, I see them.

And I see my Dad.
A little skinnier than the Dad I know. Hairier.
He's saying Hello! to Eric,
introducing himself to John.
He gestures towards my Mum
stood in their new doorway.
The 80's sun shines on my big brother
wrapped in my Mum's arms,
my big sister stands nervously behind her legs.
The dead-end of a cul-de-sac
opening up a new world.

Eric hands over a bag of sugar.
John helps carry a sofa and stops for a beer.
Vanessa introduces baby Christopher.
My kitchen gets smaller.
The new young couple
and their stuff in the rain
are as wet as my cheeks.
