Croydon Harriers update - August 2020

Hello Croydon Harrier members!

We hope you are all well.

We had hoped to bring you good news in relation to Croydon Arena by now but sadly its not to be. Thank you to everyone who has written to their MP, local councillor and Better UK asking about the track. We had a meeting with Councillor Oliver Lewis at the end of July who confirmed that the track would be open in October. Although that's encouraging, it is still very late in the day. As soon as we hear differently we will keep you posted.

In the meantime, please keep contacting Better UK via social media to apply the pressure. Even though we are resigned to October as the reopening date, there is always a glimmer of hope.

If you have any questions in relation to this, do reply to this email.

Training / coaches thanks
A massive thank you to all our coaches and run leaders who have been quick to adapt in these trying times and for continuing to lead our groups of athletes. I'm sure all athletes, parents and supporters are grateful for their efforts! Do take the time to thank them.

Open Meetings
It has been great to see so many athletes competing in Opens in recent weeks as the athletics 'season' resumed. You can follow the results on our social media channels and a weekly round-up can be found on our website. There has even been the odd road race that has returned, with Glenn Barden taking part in the MK 5000. There is no news on an indoor season or cross-country events as things stand but we will update as soon as we hear.

There are Open meetings coming up throughout September, do check with your coach for the latest information in relation to these.

100th Anniversary, 26th September
This year is the club's 100th anniversary. What a year! The latest in relation to our celebrations can be found on this link. It includes information on how to join our virtual event on the 26th September and other celebrations. We are encouraging all members to take part in a 24 hour virtual relay on this day, or if this isn't possible then to take part in a virtual 5k (walking and crawling permitted!) instead. If you are interested, do reply to this email - this is open to everyone!

Events latest
We have sadly had to cancel the following events due to the ongoing issues in relation to Covid:
  • 100th Anniversary dinner at Fairfield Halls (virtual alternative listed above)
  • The Croydon 10K road race (back in 2021)
  • The track and field fun day / open meeting (hopefully to be arranged in 2021)
Thanks for reading, and we will endeavour to keep you posted as events unfold.

Best wishes,

Matt, Amy and Andy
