RE's Corner

A word from the Regional Executive

Hello Everyone!
Despite the unique challenges this year, AASCCA is as active as ever.  In May, we drafted detailed infection mitigation plans and held one of the first, if not the first, post-quarantine autocrosses in the country.  A big thank you to those trailblazing volunteers!  A successful autocross season is now well underway, come play!  We are looking ahead to a robust rallycross season first at the Palmer fairgrounds, and then on Big Lake.  The exciting news is that side-by-side and similar UTVs have become eligible to compete based on national rules.   We continue to offer 1 free event entry for any new members.  Further down the road we hope to have a road rally event, and/or a trek for those who like to casually cruise with other enthusiasts.
So, what do we need from you?  Come play, and volunteer!  We always need folks who are enthusiastic about motorsports in this great state to join in.  If you have been to a few autocrosses or rallycrosses, please consider volunteering to chair an event – the more experienced folks will show you just what to do.  It is quite satisfying to have run an event.  Also, the nomination committee is working now to put together a slate for next year’s board – please throw your name in the ring to share your ideas and leadership skills as a trustee or officer.  Descriptions of the duties can be found at   Lastly, our next ‘first-Thursday-of-every-month’ meeting is August 6th and will likely be held by Zoom.  All members are welcome.
Stay well, and I hope to see you at an upcoming event!

Autocross Update

Hi Everyone,
Just like everything else this year, the autocross season has been a bit different. We have had six events so far, with four of those being eligible for season points. With only five more events remaining, it's shaping up to be an interesting season.
Season standings are calculated off the best scores of the events needed to qualify (more than half events eligible for season points). If all planned events are held, someone who has not yet attended any eligible events could very well win a driver's championship, so all categories are very much in play!
Here are the current standings, sorted by driver class and total season points:

*yellow highlighted cells indicate >930 score for Novice event
**all scores based on the "score = (fastest driver's time/subject driver's time) x 1000" formula

Speaking of future events, we have five more events planned for the season:

All events are open to online registration only, and you can register at

Remember, to be eligible for the season championship, you must get valid scores from more than half the eligible events (Autocrosses #3-11). If we have all the planned events, that means you must have scores from five of them.

It has been a challenge to work with the restrictions of the pandemic, but I truly believe that autocross is perhaps the safest of organized motorsports to hold in these trying times. If we all work together to put on safe events, we can continue having them. Please review our hazard mitigation plan on the Motorsportsreg event pages- this plan was required by the Anchorage School District and other venue owners as a condition of our use of the facilities. Please follow the guidelines, as it will help to keep everyone safe and healthy, and allow us to keep holding events.

We are still very much interested in growing capacity to put on events. If you would like to help out by becoming a certified Solo Safety Steward, designing courses, learning how to do timing and scoring, helping out in grid, or chairing an event, please let us know! More volunteers makes it easier on everyone, and will allow us to keep a full season.

Be safe, have fun, and I'll see you on course!

Rallycross Corner

RallyCrossers! The Fall is right around the corner and we are gonna have a great season! As many of you know we had to cancel our Spring events out at the Fairgrounds… Our Permit for events (7) out at the fairground is based on the calendar year, so we are shooting to hold 7 Rallycrosses at the fairgrounds before moving over to Big Lake for the Ice Rallies.

The Regional Rallycross group is in the process of planning the season and preparing for our new competitors… UTVs!!! There is now a UTV Category so let everyone know if their UTV meets the preparation Requirement they can come out and compete against everyone else. Most UTVs will need some sort of modification to meet the requirements. Which are outlined in the 2020 SCCA Rallycross Rules 3.3 Section G. Study up and make sure your UTV can pass tech. Its going to be a blast!
