Our belated love and congratulations to John and Jenny Stevens who celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on Friday 17 June.
The PCC met on Monday to discuss a number of issues. The PCC agreed to proceed with repair work on the Tiger building (in 2026). This will eventually include: the repair and renewal of the roof; the repair or replacement of all windows; the improvement of heating in the Tiger Hall; the improvement of soundproofing between Hall and Crypt. It was agreed that the PCC is committed to the improvement of the Tiger premises as a vital (though currently underused) part of our base for serving the village as well as the church. A 'Tiger Vision' group will be convened to discuss how we can better use this significant resource for the Lord Jesus.
The PCC also received an update on investigations to repair the church organ and awaits detailed quotations for the work. Membership of the PCC subcommittees were updated to link them more closely into the PCC itself, thus improving our governance. (Names of current members are now on the church website). The PCC was updated on the future of the Youth Pastor post - we hope to advertise in January. Meanwhile Stuart Silk oversees the work, assisted by a wonderful team of church family members, for which we are enormously grateful. Finally, we had a discussion about returning to using bread and wine at the Lord's Supper. (See below).
The Lord's Supper/Holy Communion
For the last three years many churches were forced to curtail proper celebration of the Lord's Supper with bread and wine. All Saints, like many churches, did what it could and we have celebrated with wafers only, knowing that this was a necessary but unsatisfactory 'stop gap'.
Now that there is better understanding of Covid and how it spreads, advice from the Church of England has changed: 'Holy Communion should be administered in both kinds unless there is a clear and objective reason why there would be a significant risk in doing so, such as local public health warnings relating to coronavirus levels in your area'. The advice helpfully continues, 'It is important that no pressure is placed on members of the congregation to receive the sacrament if they feel unable to do so. Because of ongoing potential risks to health, an individual communicant may choose to receive only in the form of bread even if consecrated wine is being distributed'.
I am delighted to say that from now on at All Saints we will be celebrating with bread and wine. Bread will be pre-cut into individual pieces. Wine will be shared from silver chalices and wiped carefully after each person receives. The advice of the scientists is that there is very little chance of the Covid virus being passed this way. However, for various reasons some may be nervous about drinking from a shared cup. In the church family we want to extend grace and love to one another, recognising each other's consciences and needs. Of course, if you have Covid symptoms, please follow government advice to test and if necessary isolate in order to protect others. We look forward to celebrating the Lord's Supper from this Sunday! MISSION Mission Partner Focus: Anderson family in Bolivia
Please pray for
A small boy called Gabriel whom we are teaching to read. Pray for him as his family circumstances are difficult and he lives with his granny and grandpa. Pray for him to benefit from Sunday School and that he would learn to read and fit in at school
Jonny as he encourages the Temple of Faith church to be more consistent with their children’s ministry. Pray that more Sunday school teachers would come forward and that there would be good synergy between Jonny and the young group of elders who preach at the church
God to provide for Jonah’s education. He is missing his brother and sister whilst they are away and he needs more interaction with other children. Pray for wisdom and God’s provision
Joel and Joanna as they return to Bolivia for the long summer holidays. Pray for happy times and that we would disciple them and help them mature into adulthood.
