Hi friends!

I'm back from Africa and feeling very inspired to find new ways to combine my interests. It was incredible to experience one of the largest protected ecosystems on Earth, and I am so grateful that people have preserved land and wildlife the way they have. 🙏 (Perhaps this is something I can contribute to, too... 🤔)

I'm not entirely sure how to apply my current skill set to different interests of mine, but I bet a lot of you are wondering how to do the same.

If you think about it, living is just waiting to die. The question is then, "What will you do as you wait?" I look around and see too many people watching the time pass. The way I see it, since I'm here anyway, I ought to make the very most of the time I have. Why not do something cool, interesting, and fun?! Why not create something beautiful, dive deep into something that tickles you, or help change the way others view the world? 😍

Knowing how to code is pretty powerful. You can build software to do just about anything. You can apply your engineering skills to education, art, or health and fitness. You can raise awareness for a cause, make a resource more accessible, or facilitate connections between people who are trying to find one another. Whatever you think is important, fun, or interesting, there's a way to amplify it with code.

I don't know when or what I'll decide, but if you're also thinking about how to combine code with your interests, here are six companies that may help get you thinking: 😉

Minerva (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA or Remote
Does not provide relocation support. Does sponsor work authorizations.
Minerva integrates advanced classroom technology with research-backed pedagogy to help institutions improve learning outcomes for their students. They also have Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute, their accredited 4-year undergraduate institution, and a team that is deeply passionate about education.

The company is roughly 50% in the San Francisco Bay Area and 50% across the US and Europe. As a distributed team, collaborative activities like meetings, pairing, and code reviews are designed to be remote by default... and they collaborate a lot! Engineers, PMs, and designers work closely with academic team members and everyone has opportunities to try out or grow into new roles.

Hipcamp (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations.
Hipcamp makes it easy for people to explore, adventure, and find the best campsite.  Their CEO, Alyssa, started Hipcamp to get more people outside and is passionate about sustainability. Most people who want to work at Hipcamp are concerned about increasing access to the outdoors while also protecting it for future generations. Naturally, they all use their own product on weekends. ⛺

TeamUp (profile) 📍 Portland, OR or Remote (US)
Does not provide relocation support. Does not sponsor work authorizations.
TeamUp builds management software to help fitness studios run their businesses better. The vast majority of their customers started from a passion for their craft (yoga, CrossFit, dance) and they're proud to help these small business owners and instructors. "As studio- and gym-goers ourselves, it is incredibly rewarding to be able to write code that immediately improves the lives of the people we interact with."

Cameo (profile) 📍 Los Angeles, CA or Chicago, IL
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations.
Cameo lets you book personalized video shoutouts from your favorite people. Fan of the NFL, Bachelor Nation, or hip-hop? You can hear from all kinds of talent on Cameo. It's been an exciting year for the company and they're now hiring engineers to help scale to millions of users, build out search and discovery, and improve their UI and video performance as they reach the limits of what React Native can do.

Stitch Fix (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA or Remote (USA)
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations.
Stitch Fix is personal styling for men, women, and kids that sends clothing to your door. You don't have to love fashion to work there, you can also love data. As a data-driven company, they employ as many data scientists as they do software engineers. Where traditional retailers rely on industry standard size breaks, they leverage data to better utilize inventory and make informed decisions when buying.

VSCO (profile) 📍 Oakland, CA
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations on a case-by-case basis.
VSCO is a mobile creative channel made for creators, by creators. They build creative tools, spaces, and connections to help people fall in love with their own creativity and are a great place for engineers who want a creative outlet, too. And even though they're foraying into new spaces from a tech stance, they don’t expect candidates to be familiar with every technology they use. Just be curious!

There are so many other companies on Key Values that apply technology to some other industry. Whether you're passionate about food, travel, or patient care, I urge you to keep your mind and eyes open for different ways to combine your interests and skills!

Life is the ultimate Choose Your Own Adventure, so here's to making the very most of ours!
