Hi friends!

Last week was all about big companies, so today I'm bringing you 10 startups with 15 employees or fewer. 🙌

There are many reasons why you should join an early stage startup. People love to focus on the potential upside, but I'd argue there are better and more important factors to consider. Here are three:
  • You want to start your own company someday. You may not be ready to yet, but why wait to get relevant experience? You'll learn more about how to build a business as employee #10 than you ever will as employee #1000.
  • You want variety. Some people (like me!) don't feel challenged or excited by doing the same thing every day. Young startups are perfect for us because there are always more jobs than there are people to do them. #breadth
  • You want to have outsized impact. Your contributions on a small team are massive. Not only will you leave your mark on the product and business, but you'll also shape the company's culture. And that's rad.
Being an early employee at a startup isn't for everyone, but I personally can't imagine doing anything else. 😉

If you want to join a small company, remember to ask tough questions and find out if you're aligned with the founders and their vision for the future. Are they solving a problem you care about? Are you excited about how they define success? Do you believe they're well positioned to achieve that success? And finally, will you be able to learn a lot and have fun even if the company doesn't succeed?!

Below are 10 very different companies. They all have 15 or fewer employees and they are all hiring. Get to know who they are and read their Key Values profiles. If any of them pique your interest, I'd be more than happy to make an introduction for you –– just fill out this form👈👀

ActZero (profile) 📍 Seattle, WA and Toronto, ON
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations.
ActZero provides businesses with cybersecurity protection though a unified, AI-driven security platform. While the company is only 8 months old, they look and act more like a Series B stage business: they have clear product market fit, secure funding, and compensate employees as such. They were able to hit the ground running because all 4 of their founders are hyperscale/security professionals.

Point (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA
May provide relocation support. May sponsor work authorizations.
Point is a mobile bank that offers a high-yield checking account (1.9% APY) and debit card with meaningful rewards (like 3% cashback on Uber and 4% cashback at coffee shops). Their biggest advantage right now is speed: as a small team, they can ship a new debit card in 1/3 of the time as Wells Fargo or Chase. They'll be launching their product this fall, but you can email their CEO Patrick for early access.

Coast (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA or Remote
Provides location support. Sponsors work authorizations.
Coast helps the deskless workforce (think restaurants) communicate quickly and flexibly through mobile. Founders Rohit and Miwa know this market well because they previously built and sold another company serving the same audience. 💯

Universe (profile) 📍 Brooklyn, NY or Remote (US)
Provides relocation support. Can transfer existing visas.
Universe is the first website builder designed from the ground up for phones. Drag, drop, and make a site from your mobile device in less than 60 seconds. Pro tip from their founder and CEO, Joe: make a site before reaching out! 💎

Vanta (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA
Provides relocation support. May sponsor work authorizations.
Vanta is securing the internet by providing companies with a security-in-a-box solution. Co-founders Christina and Erik each have an acquisition under their belt, and their experience shows: they've had zero customer churn thus far. 👏

Compound (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations.
Compound is a new peer-to-peer payments app that allows you to share money without a joint bank account. Founded by Amanda and Todd, they're currently a team of seven, in stealth, and hiring engineers at all levels of experience. 👌

EyeLevel (profile) 📍 Denver, CO or San Francisco Bay Area
Provides relocation support and sponsors work authorizations on a case-by-case basis.
EyeLevel is a conversational marketing platform comprised of digital assistants and chatbots. The vision came from a project at IBM Watson & The Weather Company, but their four founders have since spun EyeLevel out into its own company. 🦋

Dark (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA
Provides relocation support. Does not sponsor work authorizations.
Dark is a holistic programming language, editor, and infrastructure. They are developers building a product for developers, and their founders, Ellen and Paul, often take developers in residence. Dark is currently in stealth. 🦹

TeamUp (profile) 📍 Portland, OR or Remote
No relocation support or work authorizations needed –– they're remote!
TeamUp is all-in-one business management software for fitness businesses. Their founders, Tom and Matt, were once captains of MIT's crew team and now they lead a self-funded, profitable, and distributed team that loves health and fitness. ❤️

CoinTracker (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA
Provides relocation support. Does not sponsor work authorizations.
CoinTracker helps cryptocurrency holders track their portfolio and generate their crypto tax returns with a click of a button. They're profitable (>$1M in the last year) and are tracking $1B+ in cryptocurrency. 💰

If you browse a handful of these companies, you'll notice just how different they are from one another. Their missions, backgrounds, and personalities are what make them so unique!

Again, if you're interested in getting in touch with any of the startups above, I can help make an intro. I've worked with at least one founder at each of the startups above, and would love to connect you!
