Hi friends!

In the spirit of Halloween, here are a few things that scare the living 💩 out of me:
  1. People pretending to like their jobs even though it's clear they don't.
  2. Job seekers spamming companies with resumes hoping that 1 out of the 100 cold emails they send will result in them finding their dream job.
  3. Hearing someone say, "That company sounds boring," after only hearing one or two sentences about what they do.
Let's start at the top.

✨ You don't have to be head-over-heels in love with your job every single day, but you do need to recognize when it's been a long time since you last felt that spark. Many of us devote the majority of our waking hours to our work, and if that work is draining, it sucks the life out of everything else: our sleep, our health, our relationships, our mood... everything.

It is normal and okay to grow apart from something or someone else. Things change. People change. So don't pretend to like something that no longer serves you.

🎬 Once you acknowledge this, you can take action. Be thoughtful and deliberate in what you do next. Not only do I get hit up by recruiters every day about jobs at xyz, I now also get spammed by job seekers. Any message that looks templated, I archive. If you don't put in the time to personalize your outreach messages, don't expect anyone to put in the time to respond. Quality > quantity, y'all.

🧠 And when you're ready to open your mind to the world of possibilities, keep it open. It is too easy to judge a book by its cover, so be better than that. Is home cleaning sexy? No. But working at Homejoy was one of the best and most formative jobs of my life! Allow yourself to be surprised. In fact, challenge anything that doesn't immediately appeal to you to win you over!

CompanyCam is the newest team on Key Values (woohoo!) and a perfect example of a company that surprised me over and over again. 😍 Now it's your turn:

CompanyCam (profile) 📍 Lincoln, NE or Remote (US)
No relocation support or work authorizations needed –– they're remote-ok!
CompanyCam is a photo-based app that helps construction contractors stay up-to-date on projects in real time. Their CEO Luke was working at his family’s large roofing company, struggling to keep track of all the photos the crews were taking. Finally, in 2015, he decided to build a cloud-based solution to change the whole game. Yup, they even have an integration with DroneDeploy.

They're currently a ~35-person team that keeps sacred “meeting-free” days twice a week, is product-focused, and believes that attending your kid’s dance rehearsal is as (or more!) important than shipping a certain feature. After all, "your kids are only young once!" ❤️

LightStep (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA or Remote
Provides relocation support. Can transfer existing visas.
LightStep builds observability tools at the scale and complexity that enterprises need them. They fully support internal mobility and offer both management and individual contributor tracks for engineers. In fact, many have shaped their own hybrid roles within the company. They also have a dedicated open source team that speaks at conferences and hosts the On-Call Me Maybe podcast. 📞

Samsara (profile) 📍 San Francisco, Atlanta, London, and San Jose
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations.
Samsara builds internet-connected sensor systems. Even with 1,200+ employees, they are experts at moving fast. In four years, they've gone from 0 to 10,000+ customers and Samsara is now valued at $6.3B. They've achieved this with the leadership of their experienced cofounders (who are no strangers to building a successful company) and by letting their engineers sit in the driver's seat.

ReadMe (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA
Provides location support. Does not sponsor work authorizations.
ReadMe makes it easy to create beautiful, personalized, and interactive docs. Documentation edits normally take days to push through, but with ReadMe, companies can push out updates in seconds. They're so customer-centric that customer feedback guides their product roadmap, which is not only public, but also allows users to upvote features. (Not gonna lie –– that's pretty dope. 👏)

Minerva (profile) 📍 San Francisco, CA or Remote
Does not provide relocation support. Does sponsor work authorizations.
Minerva integrates advanced classroom technology with research-backed pedagogy to help institutions improve learning outcomes for their students. They are a distributed team with ~50% of their team spread across the U.S. and Europe, and they're big on work/life balance. Team members are encouraged to take at least four weeks per year, and many take up to six.

Credit Sesame (profile) 📍 Mountain View or San Francisco
Provides relocation support. Sponsors work authorizations.
Credit Sesame is a financial wellness company that helps people take charge of their credit and loans. They're a ~100-person company that has made steady and measured growth since they started in 2009, and they have multiple employees who have worked there since the very beginning (😮 wow, right?!). And as a data-driven company, every engineer works with at least one data analyst.

Today is Halloween, which means tomorrow is November, which means 2020 is around the corner. If you're not totally geeked about what you're doing today, don't wait until next year to start making moves. Most people think hiring slows down during the holidays, but in many cases that's far from true! Companies who are trying to hire before the end of the year will kick it into high gear in these final weeks –– so run, don't walk!

And if anyone needs encouragement about starting their job search, feel free to reply to this email. I don't have candy to give out this year, but I do have pep talks.

No tricks, just treats.
🍫✌️,
Lynne (@lynnetye and @keyvaluesio)

Ps. My one and only sister is giving a TED Talk tomorrow. And I'm not talking about the local community TEDx –– I'm talking about TED, the global stage. I literally couldn't be more excited or proud and I can't help but tell everyone I know so now you know, too!!! 😜
