A Few Thoughts from PEDC's Executive Director: Grit: It's What's Kept PEDC Members Going

I finally read Angela Duckworth's Grit. I'm not sure why it took me so long; I guess my stack of things to read during covid finally got my attention. I’m glad I did it.

Chapter 9 of the book is simply titled ‘Hope’. In Duckworth’s vernacular, hope is not a passive wait-and-see-what-happens concept. Duckworth’s hope is much more active. Her hope is the belief that through our passion-focused actions we can improve our situation whatever that might be. Now that we are facing potentially dark days this winter due to continued covid infections, I am pledging to take Duckworth’s hope to heart – actively looking for ways to improve an extended stay in my home office.

I also draw inspiration from this month’s PEDC membership meeting that was practically a testament to Duckworth's grit-hope. The PEDC membership is filled with companies actively trying to improve their own situation and possibly the world's situation in the energy and sustainability space. Whether it is Diana Newcomer at XCo Green trying to improve HVAC performance in the industrial space or William Lehner at Independence Hydrogen trying to improve infrastructure backup power, grit in all its forms and fashions is on display within the PEDC membership.

Into the fall and winter, we at PEDC are continuing our flagship programming with our semiannual cycle of Pitch Practice, Pitch Night and Angel Network meeting. Please join us for the public facing events to see our members’ grit in all its active hopeful glory.

Be well, be safe -

Dave McCarthy Executive Director
As your start-up continues to grows, should you consider a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for investors?

If you're not sure but want to find out more about SPVs, then be sure to register for "The Hows & Wherefores of Special Purpose Vehicles for Startups & Investors" being presented on Thurs., 11/5, 2:00 - 5:00 pm

Think about it, it's all fun until...

A) Your team loses the Super Bowl.

B) The parents get home.

C) You actually need to start writing/collecting checks for an angel investment.

PEDC can't help you with A or B.  We've got C covered.

In this 3-hour roll-up-the-sleeves working session, PEDC's Executive Director and multi-time angel investor, David McCarthy will explain why and how you might want to do an angel investment through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in understandable language and presenting relevant case studies. Workshop participants will come away with:
  • An understanding of why both sides of the deal table might want to do an investment via an SPV;
  • A road map on how to set up the SPV at the state, federal and banking levels, including tips and tricks to streamline the setup and maintenance process;
  • If applicable, your SPE set up legally and ready to accept checks; and,
  • An understanding of your specific situation and how to discuss the process with your network.
This may seem a little geeky and esoteric, but you will be glad you attended especially when your investors ask you, "How much should I write the check for?"

Winter 2020 Pitch "Night" is Happening: Thurs., 12/3, 3:00-5:30 pm
Mark Your Calendars & Register Today!

The PEDC team is busy putting together another fantastic program featuring up-and-coming clean energy and sustainability tech start ups for its Winter 2020 Pitch "Night". We'll once again host attendees, sponsors, investors, and competing teams virtually using Zoom.

PEDC's bi-annual event brings together a wide variety of industry thought leaders and innovators to get a sneak preview of groundbreaking next generation technology. The program is also an opportunity to meet new peers and expand your network.

Pitch "Night" is also a great venue for companies looking to reach out to a new audience. Event sponsors are featured in all promotional communications (emails, newsletters, social media posts) and are given time during the program to introduce themselves to attendees. For more information about how to partner with PEDC contact Dave McCarthy, Executive Director.

More information about participating companies and how to register will be available in the coming weeks, but for now, but sure to set a calendar reminder for Thurs., 12/3, 3:00-5:30 pm!
Prelude to Pitch "Night":
Pitch Practice & Peer Feedback Workshop
Wed. 11/18, 3:00-5:00 pm

PEDC and the Clean Energy Business Network are co-hosting a Pitch Practice & Peer Feedback Workshop to teach you best practices for giving compelling web-based presentations. The program will be geared toward creating and giving convincing pitches to a virtual audience. Now more than ever these skills are critical to your company's success.

During this virtual program you'll:
  • Deliver your pitch to a ‘room’ full of peers and some investor-advisors.
  • Get feedback.
  • And, re-run your pitch.
Space for companies that would like to practice their pitch is limited, so if you're interested please contact Dave McCarthy, PEDC Executive Director after registering to discuss your participation.

We recommend the Kawasaki 10-20-30 Rule of pitch development. You will also be expected to pay attention to your peers’ pitches and provide meaningful feedback to them too. Focus will be on presentation style and format; not on dissecting 5-year cash flow pro formas. Prior attendees of this session have said “this is the most valuable feedback I have ever gotten.”

The Angels' Corner

Business as usual in an unusual time. We had our 3rd quarter PEDC Angels meeting of which two companies are in due diligence. Early stage companies are not only advancing their technology, but raising money and increasing sales - the content of a company’s pitch deck connects it all. This leads into my mention of Winter Pitch Practice event. This event is co-hosted with Clean Energy Business Network (CEBN) our awesome partner organization. It’s scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 18 and is an opportunity for registered companies to get feedback from the audience on their pitch deck. The better the pitch the better the chances of getting funding. Winter Pitch “Night” is starting to come together for Thursday, Dec. 3rd followed by a 4th quarter PEDC Angels meeting. I look forward to continuing the conversation. Follow us on our LinkedIn company page.

Cheers,

Molly Medlin
