An Interview with GHSS on The Wellness Zone
By McKenna McNevan, SEGCHC Co-op Student
On June 7, 2018 McKenna McNevan, a highschool co-op student with the South East Grey Community Health Centre interviewed Grey Highlands Secondary School’s principal Andrea Tang about the school’s Wellness Zone.

The Wellness Zone, located at Grey Highlands Secondary School (GHSS) in Flesherton, is a place for students to participate in games and activities, with easy access to a Nurse Practitioner, Dietitian, Counsellors and Youth Support through the South East Grey Community Health Centre (SEGCHC).  Andrea Tang, Principal at GHSS expressed gratitude that GHSS has been able to partner with SEGCHC to provide students with programs and services such as the sexual health clinic, nutrition counselling and Social Work services. Tang says “The Wellness Zone has had an enormous impact on the school and student wellness”. Tang explains that students value all the services and programs, including: Girls Fitness, Find Us Fridays (and the popular- karaoke), and workshops helping students with stress, strategies for postsecondary life and other influencing opportunities.  The Wellness Zone also has an emergency food cupboard which provides students with access to safe, good quality, nutritious food.  Donations are always welcome.

Tang admires how far the Wellness Zone has come in reducing the stigma around mental health.  Staff and students have a better understanding of wellness. The Wellness Zone is more than Tang hoped it would be as students continue to proactively seek support. Many students are affected enormously by The Wellness Zone, with the majority of the students seeking support or involved in one way or another. To Tang, The Wellness Zone is a component of students success, “sometimes getting your credits isn’t the most important thing…your mental and physical health is most important”. Tang’s big vision for the Wellness Zone in the future is for it to be community accessible, engaging parents and possibly gain an outreach service.  Tang see’s The Wellness Zone changing as youth change, hopefully gaining a strong student voice and government, she hopes to have more young students feeling empowered.

Ebony White, a student at GHSS has been positively impacted by her experience at the Wellness Zone. Ebony comments that the Wellness Zone means everything to her and it’s one of her favourite places to be.  She loves everyone there and it makes her life so much better. She values the counselling service the most, saying the counsellors really connect with you.  Ebony’s advice to anyone in Grade 9 is simply “GO THERE! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT”.
Chatsworth Good Food Box Needs Your Help!

The Health Centre is working with community partners to try to establish a Good Food Box program in Chatsworth.  To get the program started, they need a few community members to help pack the boxes, once per month. It usually only take a couple of hours.

If you know of anyone that would be willing to offer a couple of hours per month to help the community access affordable healthy food, please have them contact Laura Needham at Public Health see flyer for more information
