Online DMCA Agent Registration Deadline Pending.

Russell Wilson isn't the only one preparing for the fall. By the end of the year all website owners must update their DMCA information on the U.S. Copyright Office's new, electronic registry. If you have a website—and we know you do—let us help you prepare.

Defend Your Trade Secrets.

For most of you, your intellectual property is one of your most valuable assets. But those assets often can't be registered with the USPTO. Instead, most of you rely on trade secret law. But, because there was no federal law, you could not be sure whether a California court would protect your trade secrets. That changed last year when Congress passed the Defend Trade Secrets Act. Like its state counterparts, the Act still requires you to take reasonable steps to safeguard your secrets. But the federal law should provide more predictability as to what steps are reasonable. If you're curious about what steps are reasonable or need help protecting your trade secrets, we'd be happy to help. We have experience safeguarding secrets and litigating trade secret cases.

Washington's New Paid Sick Leave Requirements.

Seattle already had its own paid sick leave ordinance. However, in 2016, Washington voters voted for a new sick leave law, which does not supersede local ordinances that provide greater sick leave, becoming effective on January 1, 2018. All employers across the state will now be required to provide paid sick leave to employees. Let us help you navigate and comply with the new rules, which include requirements for accrual rates, usage, and reporting requirements.

Did You Know?

Focal charges a flat fee for most trademark registrations. Registering your trademark protects your businesses and offers many benefitssuch as presumptive ownership of your mark, additional damages in case of counterfeiting, and much more.

New EU-US Privacy Shield Requirement.

Does your business collect information from EU/Switzerland users that can identify an actual person from that area? Even IP address information counts as personal data covered by the Privacy Shield. If you are not Privacy Shield certified, you run the risk of being subject to significant fines and being forced to respond to complaints or investigations in the EU or Switzerland. By being certified, any complaints and investigations would be handled in the US under the Federal Trade Commission's jurisdiction. If this applies to you, Focal can help you with certification.

Whatever the case, we're here to help.
