Ooze wins top prize at LafargeHolcim Awards 2017 Latin America

We are very proud to announce that Ooze was awarded the Bronze prize at the recent LafargeHolcim 2017 Awards, the world's most significant competition in sustainable construction. From over 750 entries across Latin America (and over 5,000 worldwide), our project Água Carioca was selected as a leading example of innovative design. The jury highlighted the 'intelligence and playfulness' with which Ooze took on the pressing challenge of water supply and sanitation in informal areas in Rio de Janeiro, as well as its participatory approach:  “By making water treatment local and visible, the proposed scheme creates an active relationship between water management and the community”.

Água Carioca fundamentally turns around how we deal with water in urban areas: Instead of having to collect and transport it from each house to a treatment plant outside the city, the wastewater is cleaned and reused directly where it is produced creating a healthy, beautiful and clean habitat. We'd like to thank all our friends and colleagues over the years for their help in making Água Carioca a success, and in particular the support received from Studio-X Rio, Sitio Roberto Burle Marx, Rio de Janeiro Municipality, Dutch Consulate in Rio, Creative Industries Fund NL, Sacha Mollaret, Pedro Rivera, Gabriela Werneck, Marlon Souza, Claudia Storino, Mario Campanella, Verena Balz, Marina Hirsch, Gustavo Pacheco, Marianne von Lachmann, Mercedes von Lachmann and Izabel Noronha. Água Carioca is now moving to the next stage.

Ooze participates in 11th São Paulo Architecture Biennial

Água Carioca will be exhibited and Ooze will travel to São Paulo to start up a new water project, Água Paulista.

The Biennial theme ‘In Project’ is challenging participants to re-position the architect in the community and invigorate the city with projects. Explaining the invitation to participate, curator Marcos Rosa said: "Ooze Architects' expertise in developing large scale water systems connected to small scale prototypes transfers technical and architectural knowledge to the users, as they become an active part of the process...their architecture serves as a civic device, which proves capable of generating awareness over the critical issue of water resources."

‘Ecovention Europe’ Exhibition at De Domijnen Museum, NL

The work of Ooze and Marjetica Potrč is currently being exhibited as part of 'Ecovention Europe: Art to Transform Ecologies, 1957-2017'. The exhibition features the work of artists from across 13 countries who have all tried to expose or solve the environmental crises in Europe. The work selected recognises the importance of a good balance between plants, animals, people and their environment. They signal that Mother Earth's "resources" are not inexhaustible and, through artistic and innovative projects, seek attention for ecology and sustainability.

EDGE: Situated Practice in Art, Architecture and Urbanism

Ooze was recently invited to speak at the inaugural event of ‘EDGE: Situated Practice at UCL in London on 14th September, where we presented our projects 'The King's Cross Pond Club' and 'Between the Waters' among others. The trio of day-long symposia, presented as part of Folkestone Triennial 2017, invites participants to respond to a series of ‘edge’ locations, drawing on their own individual approaches and fields of operation to investigate particular sensory, social, environmental and other conditions. The events hope to generate a wider conversation exploring the creative use of interstitial spaces.
