Thank you for being an
SDMS Member!

This is our second edition of the new electronic newsletter we are sending out to members. We have been transitioning from print to electronic communication with our members to cut down the high cost of mailing. Over 33,000 people have joined The San Diego Memorial Society since 1958 and taken advantage of the support and pre-approved pricing from our11 participating mortuaries.
If you have friends or family who are SDMS members please ask them if they received a copy of this electronic newsletter. If they did not it is because we do not have their current email address. Please forward this newsletter to them and they can sign up by using the sign-up box below. THANKS!

The SDMS annual meeting will on April 21, 2018 at 1:00 P.M.
at San Diego Education Association
10393 San Diego Mission Rd, Suite 100
San Diego, CA 92108-2189

Mark the date on your calendar and be there, we need you!

Topics to be covered:

  • Review and approval of the 2017 financial statement and approving the 2018 operating budget.
  • Election of new Board members and a fond farewell to retirees.
  • Time for questions and answers from our members.
  • A discussion on the new POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) form.
POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) medical orders provide greater control over end-of-life care by documenting a person’s preferences regarding specific treatments and key medical decisions. Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) is a form that gives individuals more control over their end-of-life care, including medical treatment, extraordinary measures (such as a ventilator or feeding tube) and CPR. Printed on bright pink paper, and signed by both a patient and physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant, POLST can prevent unwanted or ineffective treatments, reduce patient and family suffering, and ensure that a patient's wishes are honored.

Annual Meeting Speaker:

Our speaker at the SDMS 60th annual membership meeting will be from The San Diego Coalition for Compassionate Care. The topic will focus on the new Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form which supersedes advance directives and DNR documents and requests.

Please join us on April 21st for our annual meeting.

Articles of Interest:

Every month we put up a new article of interest for our members on our website. Check back on our website at to see the latest in news and events.

My family has used SD Memorial Society for our funeral and cremation needs since 1960. At least 5 family members have used them. The rest of my family are members. I'm planning to use them for my needs. If you don't want to pay the large mortuaries and cemeteries a fortune, membership in the Society will allow you to take advantage of discounts at some of the smaller places. The Society is a non-profit consumer watchdog group that contracts with local establishments for discounted services for their members. They are very knowledgeable and will walk you thru all you need to do. No high pressure sales people that prey on you at your most vulnerable.  Awesome people. Call them first!

Can you give?

The one time membership fees we receive only cover a portion of our annual budget.

San Diego Memorial Society relies on your generosity to continue service to our members. We are focused on educating and advocating for your rights for your funeral and after-death arrangements. We gratefully accept monthly and planned gifts.

We are so much more than "cheap cremation people". We answer questions every day from folks all over San Diego. We are run by an all volunteer board.

We can't exist without your support, please help!
