Lincoln Is Crying
Like it or not, Illinois elected officials are used to being in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. For offenses, big and small, many find themselves being on the defense trying to explain away a story that has taken on a life of its own.

That theme is the focus of a documentary set to air on WTTW Chicago Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020 at 9 p.m. Lincoln Is Crying: The Grifters, Grafters & Governors of Illinois looks at the many scandals that have ensnared our elected officials over the years.

According to a description by reviewer Steve Prokopy, “…the film interviews a fun combination of political reporters, famous Chicagoans, and other cultural commentators to investigate both the crimes and the reaction to them over the decades.”

I’m one of those “fun combination” of people filmmakers John Davies and Brian Kallies interviewed for the documentary. After inviting me to the sneak preview, last year, they were kind enough to offer the documentary to Ida’s Legacy for our summer fundraiser, Legacy & Libations.

Like everything we do, it was important to not only watch the documentary, but to analyze why Illinois voters seemingly have selective outrage to the state’s various scandals du jour. If the accumulative impact of the statewide scandals weren’t so sad it would be funny, which may explain why the filmmakers chose to add humor to keep us all from crying.
