3 star Tourism NI grading award for Dobbins Inn

Dobbins Inn, Carrickfergus was recently awarded a three star grading award by Tourism NI under its Accommodation Grading Scheme, after investing significant time and energy in refurbishing their rooms and restaurant over the last year.

This family-run hotel is a listed building, first built in the early 13th Century by the Norman Knight Reginald D’Aubin. Historic renovations are ongoing to investigate how much of a 14th century castle remains behind the now modern exterior of the hotel. Exciting times!

Tourism NI’s Quality Grading Scheme for premises offering tourist accommodation, is designed to give visitors a clear idea of the standards of hospitality, service, cleanliness, comfort and food which they can expect during their stay.

Larne needs your vote for Great British High Street

Larne High Street is one of 3 Northern Ireland finalists in the Rising Star category of the Great British High Street Awards. Earlier this month the local community gave a great welcome to the visiting judges.

Environmental improvements have been credited with helping Larne become a finalist. These include street art, floral displays and “yarn bombing” as well as new paving, street lighting and furniture.

Show your support for #Larne by posting on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, using #MYHIGHSTREET and #GBHSLarne to register a vote.  Posts will be aggregated by location and as a percentage of the estimated population, contributing 30% to the high street's final score.  Voting ends 31 October 2018.

Stephen Reynolds from Ballymena is also one of three people from Northern Ireland to be shortlisted for the Regional High Street Hero Award, a category highlighting exceptional individuals within the community who run great initiatives and programmes to improve the high street experience for all.

Stephen is well known in the town and has owned the Front Page Bar for almost 30 years. He is also Vice Chairman of Ballymena BID and is also involved with the Board of Hospitality Ulster, Ballymena Retailers Against Crime (BRAC) and Ballymena Chamber of Commerce.

Winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony in London this November.

Historic restoration planned for Kelly's Coal Office

Thanks to grant funding from the Carrickfergus Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), the iconic Kelly’s Coal offices in Carrickfergus is set for a sensitive restoration into functional offices by a local developer.  Situated opposite Carrickfergus Castle, the building has been a local landmark for more than a century, but over time fell into disrepair.
Built in 1910 it was the office for the coal and shipping enterprises of prominent businessman, Charles Legg. The business was taken over in 1920 by John Kelly Ltd coal merchants and despite the office and coal yard closing decades ago, it is still locally known as Kelly’s.

The THI is an ambitious regeneration scheme for the town’s conservation area supported by £1.7million funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and £0.55million from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

Refurbishment of the building is expected to finish by summer 2019. Read more on Carrickfergus THI page or E: CarrickfergusTHI@midandeastantrim.gov.uk

Visitor services to boost tourism for borough
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s tourism services are being transformed to help grow the economy and boost tourism to the area.

It follows a review designed to align the services better with areas of high international visitor footfall, increase spend in the local economy and make the most efficient use of resources. The recommendations follow an independent report by international experts in the provision of visitor information commissioned by Council.

Staff and services are being realigned to capture more international visitors at key sites such as The Gobbins and Carrickfergus Castle and allow staff to promote towns, villages and attractions in the Borough to these visitors at an early stage in their journey.
