Mark's Midweek Musings & Updates

"Thank you ... boldly embracing the future at St. Paul's!!"

Dear Friends,

It has been lovely to have such balmy weather, a nice change and a reminder that spring is on the way. Soon we will have more such days and can shed our winter boots, coats, scarves and gloves.

Today marks the beginning of Lent. We do have two communion services with the imposition of ashes at 10 am and 7 pm. The weather forecast is calling for a winter storm that might well compromise travel. Please be safe and do not venture out if you feel that is best.

In any event, I invite you to join with me in observing a holy lent as a time to renew ourselves in the faith God has blessed us with and in the faithfulness we are called to as disciples of Jesus. May these coming days of Lent be a gift which brings us closer to God and always grateful for the blessing of His Son Jesus Christ.
On Sunday at the end of our 1045 service
we gathered on the front steps of the church
and burned our palms in preparation for Ash Wednesday.

Thankfully there wasn't a snow ball thrown this year!!
Last Sunday, there were about 30 parishioners
who gathered for our annual Administrative Vestry.

We celebrated all God has been up to,
had discussions about motions and future direction
and made significant decisions about future ministry.

We have so much to be grateful for,
an abundance of God's blessings bestowed upon us!!
At vestry, we engaged in table discussions.

First question ...

How do you feel about your experience at St. Paul's today?
  • inspired, uplifted, grateful
  • Mark is so positive
  • we are able to worship the way we like to
  • DATE SQUARES!!
  • good companionship over lunch
  • satisfied
  • good
  • positive especially with growth & our involvement in the community
  • positively encouraged
  • refreshed
  • surprised by increase in investments
  • grateful and supportive for Mark's leadership and creation of new things
  • miss the children at 10:45 service
  • the congregation isn't together enough
Last night was the annual tradition
of our Pancake Supper.

Thank you to everyone who was involved
in this wonderful fellowship event
that promotes community here at St. Paul's
and engagement with our wider community too.
The Liturgical season of Lent leading up to Easter
will soon be upon us.

Here are some of the ways we will mark Lent
as a time of self examination, prayer
and renewal of spirit here at St. Paul's ...
  • As a parish we will be using the resource "We Journey Together" which offers daily scripture readings and reflections
  • Ash Wednesday Communion services with imposition of ashes at 10 am and 7 pm
  • Candlelight communion services will be offered on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm
  • we will not be producing service leaflets for 8:15 or 10:45 Sunday services and distribute an announcement page with upcoming notices and events
  • our Green Team ministry is encouraging us to participate in joining the annual Lenten “Give it up for the Earth!” postcard campaign from Citizens for Public Justice.  This year’s campaign calls on the federal government to invest in a national just transition and decarbonization strategy for Canada, which fits with our baptismal covenant and promises

"Are you ready for these forty days?
Let's move to Easter together,
in companionship of those
who know this road by heart!"

I look forward to sharing along with you
in these daily readings & reflections.

Remember to make notes in your booklets
and think of any insights or questions
you might share as part of our worship on Sunday.

Let's grow in our faith together
and in the passionate spirit God has blessed us with!!
From our Green Team at St. Paul's ...

Here are some disciplines for Lent that focus on our baptismal promise to "safeguard the integrity of God’s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth"
  • walking, biking, or taking the bus
  • buying less, buying local, buying used
  • limiting air travel
  • eating less meat, eating local & in season
  • reducing electricity use
  • supporting eco-friendly businesses
  • divesting from fossil fuels
  • buying fair trade
  • cutting food waste refusing single-use / over-packaged items
We will meet this Saturday from 10 am to noon
at St. Paul's
to continue our work together
in addressing the issues of poverty in our community.

Hope to see you there!!

Thank you to Stacey and Evelyn!!
"Thank you ... boldly embracing the future of St. Paul's!!"

I want to acknowledge and say thank you for the bold decision on Sunday at vestry to fully embrace the ministry we feel called to for the children, young people and their families of our community. Vestry together made the decision that we need to do all we can to fund this out of our operating budget. That meant increasing the donations we are hoping to receive through envelopes, PAR and special gifts at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is a leap of faith and an affirmation of the leadership's desire to broaden our ministry to a demographic that is forcibly absent in the membership of St. Paul's.

Over my years of ministry, I have learned that there is never 100% support for initiatives. However, I've also learned that that doesn't diminish the potential and opportunities that can be embraced. I appreciate the voices and concerns of those who are apprehensive of the bold move vestry took on Sunday. And I appreciate your ongoing support of St. Paul's even though you may not totally agree with the direction being taken forward. Your views and opinions matter and I appreciate your honesty in voicing them.

Something else I have learned over the years is that for me the gospel ministry we are called to is about taking risks, embracing uncertainty and trusting in what God is and will continue to do through our faithfulness. For me, the gospel, and thereby ministry, isn't about playing it safe, being cautious our believing that we need to hold on to provisions for the future so that we will have a future.

Our church, the parish of St. Paul's that is so important to us is really God's church, not ours. And the ministry we do is God's ministry and not solely our own. So to be faithful for me means always being attentive to what the gospel calls us to do with the abundance we have been blessed with. I recall the parable that Jesus told of the master who left his servants in charge of his affairs trusting them to use them appropriately. Remember the one who buried it out of fear for what the master might do on his return. And in fact, he reprimanded the servant for not being faithful in using what he had been entrusted with.

I thank God that Jesus didn't play it safe in his life and ministry, that he didn't avoid risk and wan't cautious. And likewise, I thank God that those who built the early church didn't play it safe, but took risks including their very lives to be faithful in their calling and vocation. But it doesn't end there. I'm grateful for all those over the centuries who have build the church up into what it is today. That includes those who built this church 186 years ago. We have what we enjoy as our spiritual home because of the risks they took by not being cautious, but by embracing boldly the potential that lay before them.

And now, that potential lies before us. What will our legacy be? Will we be remembered for the risks we took to be faithful and to build up the ministry of St. Paul's? We've begun to move ahead boldly and to take a moderate risk. Let's be bold in the spirit of the gospel and in our discipleship as followers of Jesus.
I offer us this prayer as we boldly embrace the future God has in store for us here at St. Paul's ...

In this very moment,
with the many blessings you have abundantly poured upon us,
as we look to the future you are inviting us into here at St. Paul's,
help us first and foremost to be faithful
and in that to deepen our relationship with Jesus
as we engage our calling as His disciples.

May we bravely embrace opportunities before us
taking the risk of faith to always witness
to the compassion and mercy of Jesus,
in order to touch all generations,
and especially to potentially reach children,
young people and their parents.

Give us insight through the gift of your Holy Spirit
that we may have the courage to embrace
all the ministry that lies ahead of us.
We ask this through your Son Jesus Christ. Amen
