100 Quilts for Children and Families in Memory of
Anne Smith

Blue Bar Quilts is pleased to have participated in a project honoring South Central Wisconsin quilter and teacher, Anne Smith, that resulted in the creation of 100 quilts for children and cancer patients.

Anne was a well-known Madison-area quilting teacher, a long-arm quilting business owner and artist. Tragically, Anne and her husband of 42 years, Rusty, were killed last April in an automobile accident in Albury, New South Wales, Australia, while visiting their daughter and newborn grandchild.

To honor her memory, Anne’s friends set out to turn her extensive stash of fabric, patterns and notions into quilts to benefit area charities. To achieve this goal, her friends created 30 quilt kits then held a Sew Day & Sale at Blue Bar Quilts to place Anne’s fabrics and supplies in the capable hands of quilters from around the region.
What started out as 30 kits snowballed into over 100 completed quilts that were donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities and SSM Dean Oncology. Blue Bar Quilts was pleased to host countless sew-in events and serve as a transfer point for quilts as they went through the stages of completion. This project was truly a labor of love by many people working many hours in Anne’s memory. Anne’s devoted circle of friends, area quilters and Blue Bar Quilts are pleased that her memory lives on in the many quilts her extensive stash created that now bring much needed warmth and comfort to children and cancer patients in the Madison area.
