Welcome Autumn!

Photo by Aaron Burden on UnsplashIt’s hard to believe another summer has come and gone, but with the transition to autumn we love to cozy up indoors and get working on new projects and gift ideas we’ve been storing up all summer long. It’s been great to see so many of you back from travels, your gardens or just being home with kids and ready to get sewing again! Now that everyone is settled back in school, it’s a great time to treat yourself to a class before the hectic pace of the holidays sets in.

A Brief Story About Our Name

We are asked a lot of questions everyday, but one that comes up over and over is, “Where did the name Blue Bar Quilts come from?” So here’s the story: Very early in 2016, when the shop was little more than a twinkle in my eye, Diana (my cohort and business manager) and I were enjoying our regular Monday morning coffee when we got to brainstorming names for this new modern quilt shop I’d been dreaming about. I knew I wanted something unusual and nothing cute.

When I said I’d been thinking about generic names (Acme Quilts was one, which, was summarily rejected), we launched into reminiscing about the days when generic products first came on the scene. Like the white box on the grocery shelf that was labeled simply Macaroni & Cheese in a basic black font. Or the generic beer can with “Beer” positioned above a blue stripe.

Partly in jest, Diana came out with, “What about Blue Bar Quilts?” To which, I replied: “That’s it!!!” The rest is history.

Now, next time you’re in the shop, take a look at the pendant lights above the checkout desk and you’ll find our homage to our unique and simple namesake.

Architectural Quilt

Saturday, September 29

Instructor: Maday Delgado
The industrial revolution was my inspiration to create this quilt: a period of increased manufacturing and design. The quilt boasts bold, over-sized focal patches in solid colors, using varied substrates and combining smaller blocks pieced in bright colors and prints. There will be improvisation and color play, experimenting with scale to maximize interest with straight lines and sharp angles, like the structures we encounter in metropolitan areas.
