English Paper Piecing is enjoying a renaissance, and many in our Blue Bar Quilts community are big fans. We are offering an EPP Club (third Thursday of every month, 5:30-8:00 PM), classes, and new patterns and paper pieces so you can try it for yourself.

Our friend, Liz Oner @indiehipsterquilts, is our resident BBQ - EPP instigator. Liz has made some beautiful samples for the shop, teaches classes, facilitates the club, and routinely brings delicious, gluten-free baked goodies to her students.

Check our online calendar, visit the shop and join in the EPP fun!

Featured Classes

Notan: The Light/Dark Relationship

Instructor: Lorraine Torrence

Saturday, January 26

The Japanese study of Notan, meaning light/dark balance, involves learning the relationship of dark and light, positive and negative and how important this is in your quilts.

We'll work with paper cut exercises, including a traditional black and white Notan paper cut, and move on to some other paper exercises. This class will strengthen your use of backgrounds in your quilts and make the darks and lights work together in a mutually supportive way.

Surface Design with Thickened Dyes

Instructor: Pamela Niebauer

Sunday, January 27
Wednesday, April 3

We will start this class with pure play, exploring the dyes and tools by experimenting on cloth prepared by the instructor. There are many ways to apply thickened dye and we will probably discover new ones. We will use tools such as scrapers, brushes, stamps, mono-print plates, rollers and some household items. After the introductory play session, each student will get additional prepared fabric to either continue experimentation or may work with your own specific plan.

EZ Miter Method

Instructor: Tara Curtis

Tuesday, January 29

Learn the EZ Miter Method! Students will use the EZMiter template and quilt-as-you-go technique to construct a 21.5 x 21.5 inch table topper, with the option to continue adding to it at home to create a larger piece.

Tara Curtis of Wefty will teach you to construct blocks with a turned or raw edge that frame focus fabric centers. Great to use with a charm pack and use a consistent background color or multiple fabrics for a scrappier look. This great quilt as you go technique can be further customized using batting for a cuddly effect or none for a coverlet perfect for a warmer climate.

Kid's Indigo: Creating Blue Bandannas

Instructor: Kipp Inglis

Sunday, February 3

Kids will use the common kitchen chemistry ingredients of pickling lime (a canning ingredient) and fructose crystals (a form of sugar) combined with organic indigo to mix up a child safe dye. They will then learn to tie and bundle their fabrics using wooden blocks, marbles, rubber bands and craft sticks that will act as resists to create custom designs on their bandannas. The magic occurs when they learn to dip the bundled pieces into the indigo vat, take them out and watch as they oxidize from green to blue - giggles ensue! Each child will leave with 2 finished bandannas.
