The Art of Mottainai: An Introduction to Japanese Boro Stitching

Instructor: Maday Delgado

Sunday, October 28

We will use improvisation and hand-stitching with Japanese yarn and Sashiko thread to create rich textures that pay homage to the recycle and reuse culture. The focus will be on form and texture with an emphasis on improvisation. It is possible to control the color palette using this technique and Maday will provide denim scraps to expand your design choices. Mottainai means "taking good care of things with respect, making it last long, not wasting and re-appreciating" (From the magazine Selvedge: the fabric of your life, Issue 81 Japan Blue).

Wet Felting Classes

Felted Christmas Stocking

Saturday, November 3

Learn wet felting basics and history while making a handmade Christmas stocking. Wet felting uses unspun wool fibers (roving), water and a small amount of soap to create a strong fabric that is neither woven or knitted. Students will complete the project during this 4 hour class.

Wool Prefelt Table Mat

Monday, November 5

Prefelt is a lightly needled wool sheet used as a base for wet and needle felting. Not strong enough to be a fabric by itself, the felting is open and porous enough to blend beautifully with added colors. Using the finest loose wool you will develop your table mat design then embellish it with prefelt pieces. Perfect to gift or use to decorate your own holiday table.
