Design Essentials with Lorraine Torrence

Join Lorraine for this in-depth Design Series to learn all about the most essential Design Principles and Elements!

In Design Essentials 1 you will do an exercise at home each month focusing on one or more principles or elements of design, which will give you an enlightening insight into the tools to make your quilts sing. Bring your exercise to the next class where the class will engage in a critique session that will help unravel the understanding of design...and yes, you will learn how to critique each other's exercises!

We will have exercises on value, balance, color, the illusion of depth, scale and more. You will have an edge on making better quilts after taking this class!
Register Design Essentials 1
Design Essentials 2 & 3 is a combined class:

  • Design 2 students will be doing exercises from assignments in Sources and Inspiration. As in Design 1, the exercises will be given at the end of each class for the next class, which will be critique sessions of the previous month's assignment. You will be sent the first assignment a month before the class begins, so register early!

  • Design 3 students will work in a series of their own making and use the classes for the critique of ongoing work. In all exercises for Design 2 and 3 students, being mindful of past learning from previous exercises is encouraged.

The Design Essentials series is sequential. Students need to complete each level before advancing to the next.

Row by Row 2019:
Taste the Experience

Row by Row is sizzling this summer

This year’s theme is food and our free pattern, designed by Trish Frankland aka Quilt Chicken, is titled BBQ Grill.

Our row takes a graphic approach to this year's food theme with the design inspired by the classic kettle grill and the simple shapes of modern quilting. We think it works well both in color and grayscale.

Row by Row Experience is for quilters and sewists who love to travel and love to add the next new quilt to their collection. Anyone can participate.

Collect free patterns for themed rows from participating shops all over the US, Canada & Europe. Shops will be distributing their free patterns until September 4, 2019.
We hope you will join in the fun!

Our fabric license plates are on sale now for $5.99!

Bag of the Month with Sew Hungry Hippie: Trina Backpack

Instructor: Natalie Santini

Saturday, August 17

Join Natalie of Sew Hungry Hippie to make her Trina backpack. Three size options are available: Small 12" x 13" x 3" Med 15" x 16" x 4" Full 16.5" x 18.5" x 5". Make it with any woven fabric, or soft vinyl such as metallic crackle, PU leather, and a mixture of corks and quilting cotton. Trina has two zipper security pockets, one vinyl (or cotton) slip-in pocket, two expanding side pockets for water bottles, adjustable straps, a loop hanging section, and optional key fob holder inside. Natalie likes the bag made with foam interfacing best, but fusible fleece and/or quilt batting work too - and have been tested, they will make for a "squishier" bag. Cutting chart inside pattern for easy reference. Tested by sewists of varying skill, full-color photos and diagrams throughout.
