Safety First Baby Quilt & New Patterns in the Shop!

Hi Friends!

I actually finished a project, as promised! I created a quilt out of the Safety First mask panel! It came together really quickly and the instructions are very easy, so it’s beginner friendly! Get the kit here.

Safety First Baby Quilt by Gael Boyd

We also have a few new patterns online and in the store:

Patchwork & Poodles by Eliane Bergmann

Harvest Star, Zippy, Zesty, and Concrete Jungle - multiple sizes on all of them, and fat-quarter friendly!

Everyday Stitches

Another fun designer is Everyday Stitches, with two fun, bright piece quilts and a simple appliquéd quilt which would be a cool beginner project if you’ve never tried appliqué before. We have Bars and Stripes, Pin Pals and City Limits in stock.

We don’t carry many books, but we are very particular about what we do carry. We loved Jacquie Gehring’s first book, Walk, a walking foot instructional guide, and we now have Walk 2.0 with more walking foot designs! Come in and check it out!

We hope to see you soon, in store or curbside!

Talk to you soon,
💙💛❤️

A Challenge to Move Forward and Mend

Mend Challenge panels still available, submit your entry by April 30th!

Whether we like it or not, pursue it, or avoid it, there have always been quilts and quilters that express political views and ideals. Jacquie Gering made her “Veer” quilt in 2016 to express her concerns over the direction the country was moving and her disappointment in its leadership. It also reaffirmed her commitment to political and community action and to be part of the solution.Jacquie’s quilt inspired her “Mend” fabric collection from Michael Miller Fabrics. The quilt design is featured as the foundation of the collection with supplementary prints derived from the design of the flag’s starfield and its red and white stripes.

Fabrics:

Jacquie’s original quilt speaks to the impact that citizens have on the direction of our country, the responsibilities and obligations of citizenship, and the ability of our country to grow and change for the better. Jacquie added the word MEND to the original design of the veering stripe to encourage all of us to work together to foster the values of compromise, collaboration, and problem-solving. We are sewists and quilters and mending is our superpower. Jacquie wants the collection to provide an opportunity for our community to show the pride we have in our country and the power of its citizenry to work together.

Blue Bar Quilts would like to offer a challenge to our quilting friends to create in the spirit of the Mend message. Read the rules and prize details on our homepage.

Social Justice Sewing Academy

I am looking with hope to the future and believe that following the lead of our youth will bring progress.

Have you heard about Social Justice Sewing Academy? Founded in 2017, the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a youth education program that bridges artistic expression with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country, SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change. Many of their young artists make art that explores issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence and gentrification. The powerful imagery they create in cloth tells their stories, and these quilt blocks are then sent to volunteers around the world to embellish and embroider before being sewn together into quilts to be displayed in museums, galleries and quilt shows across the country. This visual dialogue bridges differences in race, age and socioeconomics and sparks conversations and action in households across the country.

This year the SJS Academy is excited to launch their 2020 Block of the Month Pattern Series! On the first of each month, they share a FREE pattern or two of a finished block that is inspired by art that youth made in SJSA workshops. Each pattern is designed by a unique quilter, adding their own personal style to each pattern while still encompassing the original youth art ideas or theme for the month. At the end of the year, participants will have the chance to piece these 20 blocks together and make a quilt representing a snapshot of youth inspired SJSA artwork!

For more information on the SJSA and how you can participate in their mission please visit their website: sjsacademy.com.

5 Contemporary Textile Artists to Celebrate During Women's History Month

Many artists who create groundbreaking textile work are women. It should come as no surprise; textiles are often relegated as crafts, and crafts are often seen as “women’s work.” But because these artworks tend to skew heavily female, amazing artists don’t get the recognition they deserve. Read the article on My Modern Met.

Our #WCW this week is Rosy Petri

Rosi Petri
Ms. Petri is a mother, artist, and multimedia storyteller originally from Racine now living in Milwaukee, WI. Her passion for social justice, art, and storytelling has allowed her to travel the country for her various projects. From these adventures, she pieces together written and auditory narratives as well as visual art to create shared experiences of bearing witness to humans being. Rosy (@thisisparadisehome) was also the Pfister Artist in Residence in 2019 in Milwaukee. Several of her works can currently be seen at the Racine Art Museum exhibition, In Stitches: Contemporary Approaches to Needlework, which continues until May 8th.

A Note of Thanks

I am so thankful for your continued business. This international health crisis is going to be a rough patch for so many small businesses and that worries me for all of us in that boat. On the other hand, it has heartened me to see how local communities have rallied in support of their friends and neighbors. May we all remain united in the face of adversity and come through this healthy and happy.

Take care my friends!
💙💛❤️Gael
