2 Sessions: December 13 & 14

Have fun while learning to use local plant materials to add beautiful colors and patterns to fabrics. We'll explore which local plants create the best colors and patterns, how different natural fabrics take colors differently, both eco-printing and dyeing techniques, and safe and sustainable dye practices. Each student goes home with a beautiful bundle of eco-dyed and/or printed fabrics for use in their own stitching projects. In the first session, we will mordant the fabrics which will create more vibrant and lasting colors from the process. Each session will be unique in the mix of plant materials and techniques used.

The Art of Mottainai: An Introduction to Japanese Boro Stitching

Instructor: Maday Delgado

November 16

We will use improvisation and hand-stitching with Japanese yarn and Sashiko thread to create rich textures that pay homage to the recycle and reuse culture. The focus will be on form and texture with an emphasis on improvisation. It is possible to control the color palette using this technique and Maday will provide denim scraps to expand your design choices. Mottainai means "taking good care of things with respect, making it last long, not wasting and re-appreciating" (From the magazine Selvedge: the fabric of your life, Issue 81 Japan Blue).
