Sherri Lynn Wood

Improvise! Join us for a presentation by Sherri Lynn Wood, author of The Improv Handbook for Modern Quilters, on Friday, August 9 at 6:30 PM.

Improvisation is at the heart of living creatively. Music, dance, theater, drawing, cooking, conversation, play, child rearing, and even science benefit from the flexibility of mind that improvisational process engenders. Leave with mind tools, tips and a fresh perspective on how to apply improv skills learned in life to your patchwork – and vice versa!

Reduce. Reuse. Or Just Don't Use.

Our First Annual Report

We launched our effort to reduce single-use plastic bag pollution on August 1, 2018, and we are happy to report that in one year, our Blue Bar Quilts community said “no thanks” to 5788 bags at checkout! When we started this effort last year we really didn’t know what to expect, but you quickly demonstrated your commitment to reducing plastic waste pollution and its environmental impact.

According to the Center for Biological Diversity, 100,000 marine animals die each year caused by plastic bag pollution; one in three leatherback sea turtles have been found with plastic in their stomachs. Our plastic shopping bag reduction effort is part of a worldwide movement to curb these heartbreaking losses of vital marine life. https://www.biologicaldiversity.org/programs/population_and_sustainability/sustainability/plastic_bag_facts.html

THANK YOU to all our dedicated customers who continue to reduce single-use plastic shopping bag consumption not only here at Blue Bar Quilts, but wherever you shop. Together we can make a difference.

The July winner of our monthly drawing to promote reduction of plastic bag waste is Kathy Stroshane. Congrats Kathy, you’ve won a 4-Fat Quarter Gift Card.

Row by Row 2019:
Taste the Experience

Row by Row is sizzling this summer

This year’s theme is food and our free pattern, designed by Trish Frankland aka Quilt Chicken, is titled BBQ Grill.

Our row takes a graphic approach to this year's food theme with the design inspired by the classic kettle grill and the simple shapes of modern quilting. We think it works well both in color and grayscale.

Row by Row Experience is for quilters and sewists who love to travel and love to add the next new quilt to their collection. Anyone can participate.

Collect free patterns for themed rows from participating shops all over the US, Canada & Europe. Shops will be distributing their free patterns until September 4, 2019.

We hope you will join in the fun!

Our fabric license plates are on sale now for $5.99!

Bag of the Month with Sew Hungry Hippie: Trina Backpack

Instructor: Natalie Santini

Saturday, August 17

Join Natalie of Sew Hungry Hippie to make her Trina backpack. Three size options are available: Small 12" x 13" x 3" Med 15" x 16" x 4" Full 16.5" x 18.5" x 5". Make it with any woven fabric, or soft vinyl such as metallic crackle, PU leather, and a mixture of corks and quilting cotton. Trina has two zipper security pockets, one vinyl (or cotton) slip-in pocket, two expanding side pockets for water bottles, adjustable straps, a loop hanging section, and optional key fob holder inside. Natalie likes the bag made with foam interfacing best, but fusible fleece and/or quilt batting work too - and have been tested, they will make for a "squishier" bag. Cutting chart inside pattern for easy reference. Tested by sewists of varying skill, full-color photos and diagrams throughout.

Surface Design with Thickened Dyes

Instructor: Pamela Niebauer

Thursday, August 8

We will start this class with pure play, exploring the dyes and tools by experimenting on cloth prepared by the instructor. There are many ways to apply thickened dye and we will probably discover new ones. We will use tools such as scrapers, brushes, stamps, mono-print plates, rollers and some household items. After the introductory play session, each student will get additional prepared fabric to either continue experimentation or may work with your own specific plan.

Boro Book

Instructor: Kipp Inglis

Learn Boro stitching, its history and link to traditional Japanese sashiko while making a small, sampler book for future reference. Using pre-stressed fabrics of different weights and weaves as pages for a book, students will "mend" the pages using various fabric scraps and stitches commonly seen in boro work. We will finish the book during the second session by learning a traditional book binding technique applied to the fabric pages. The class involves homework stitching between sessions and discussion of creative and practical ways to apply boro work.
