💙💛❤️
Dear Modern Quilting Community,

The store is open again for in-store shopping. Our hours for in-store shopping, telephone customer service and curbside pickup are Monday – Saturday, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

We believe the safest place during this pandemic is at home. If you know exactly what you want or need, we encourage you to order online or over the phone and pick-up curbside or have your order shipped.

Please do not come to the shop if you are not feeling well and have symptoms. Please come to the store with a shopping list or specific requests you need help with so we can focus on the task at hand in order to reduce the time you need to spend at the shop.

Please read and be aware of all signage at the door and in shop in order to keep yourself and everyone else around you safe and comfortable. Until there is a proven vaccine or cure for COVID-19 we are still in the midst of a pandemic and we will be operating accordingly.

Our priority is everyone’s safety. This is what you can expect when you come to shop:
  • Masks covering nose and mouth will be required for all customers and staff while in the shop.
  • Social distancing will be observed, please always be aware of your proximity to others in the shop.
  • Surfaces will be disinfected frequently and hand sanitizer will be available to all.
  • Class & event offerings and group sew days will be unavailable for the foreseeable future.
  • Shop hours for the time being will be limited to Monday – Saturday, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Closed Sunday

Social Justice Sewing Academy

I am looking with hope to the future and believe that following the lead of our youth will bring progress. Have you heard about Social Justice Sewing Academy? Founded in 2017, the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a youth education program that bridges artistic expression with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country, SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change. Many of their young artists make art that explores issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence and gentrification. The powerful imagery they create in cloth tells their stories, and these quilt blocks are then sent to volunteers around the world to embellish and embroider before being sewn together into quilts to be displayed in museums, galleries and quilt shows across the country. This visual dialogue bridges differences in race, age and socioeconomics and sparks conversations and action in households across the country.

This year the SJS Academy is excited to launch their 2020 Block of the Month Pattern Series! On the first of each month, they share a FREE pattern or two of a finished block that is inspired by art that youth made in SJSA workshops. Each pattern is designed by a unique quilter, adding their own personal style to each pattern while still encompassing the original youth art ideas or theme for the month. At the end of the year, participants will have the chance to piece these 20 blocks together and make a quilt representing a snapshot of youth inspired SJSA artwork!

For more information on the SJSA and how you can participate in their mission please visit their website: sjsacademy.com.

Featured Notions:

DecoBob set of 3 Neutral 80wt - Violet Craft

Quilt designer and teacher, Violet Craft, has teamed up with WonderFil (product info) to offer DecoBob thread in a convenient pack. This 80wt cottonized polyester thread is extremely fine and incredibly strong, making it a versatile choice for any sewing or quilting project, especially foundation paper piecing. Three basic colors are included to pair with any project, from precision piecing to embroidery, to general machine sewing, and even as a bobbin thread.

Diagonal Seam Tape 10 yds

Diagonal Seam Tape from Cluck Cluck Sew (product info) is washi tape that is placed on the front plate of your sewing machine to act as a guide while you are sewing diagonal seams. The tape is strong, thin, sticks well to almost any surface, and comes off easily. Each roll has 10 yards of tape so it should last a really long time. The red line in the center is aligned with the needle of your machine, and the black lines on either side are 1/4″ to each side from the center of the lines, to represent a 1/4″ seam allowance. The black lines won’t replace a piecing foot with a perfect 1/4″, but act as an extra guide.

Spot On Dot Magnifying Lens Set

Cutting fabric accurately is the first step in creating quilts that lay flat, points that line up, and pieces that fit just right. Spot on Dots allow you see exactly where you’ve lined up your fabric on your ruler by giving you magnified visibility at the point that matters most. For precision-perfect accuracy, Spot on Dots are the perfect tool for you! The small dot is 1 inch in diameter. The large dot is 2 inches in diameter. At the center, magnification is 3x. Place Spot on Dot adhesive side down onto your favorite ruler at the spot you want to magnify. The reusable adhesive ring will prevent the Spot on Dot from shifting while you make precise cuts. The Spot on Dot stays in place until you remove it. Store in it's case after use. You can reactivate the grip on the Spot On Dot by simply washing with mild soap and water.

Tula Pink HomeMade Challenge!

The Tula Pink HomeMade Challenge is a juried and judged quilt challenge sponsored by FreeSpirit Fabrics and Aurifil.

What Is The Purpose?

The challenge encourages quilters to pay tribute to what drives the quilter/sewist/maker to create with their hands, through the creation of a 60” x 60” quilt featuring 80% of the new Tula Pink HomeMade fabrics and using Aurifil threads. The jury, including Tula Pink, will select 12 quilts that speak to the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.” The 12 selected quilts will have the chance to be part of the HomeMade Challenge exhibit at the Fall International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, TX in October 2020, and the opportunity to win over $10,000 in prizes!

How Does It Work?

Quilters can submit up to two pieces to their local US or Canada quilt shop. The quilt shop will then select one entrant/quilter to submit to the jury.

For complete contest rules, click here.

Entry deadline: All completed and signed entry forms and images must be sent to arrive no later than SEPTEMBER 30, 2020 to FreeSpirit Fabrics. (Note that this is a receive-by deadline.)

#GrungeContest2020

I am so thankful for your continued business. This international health crisis is going to be a rough patch for so many small businesses and that worries me for all of us in that boat. On the other hand, it has heartened me to see how local communities have rallied in support of their friends and neighbors. May we all remain united in the face of adversity and come through this healthy and happy.

Take care my friends!
