Reduce. Reuse. Or Just Don't Use.

Our ongoing effort to reduce single-use plastic shopping bag consumption continues and your enthusiasm for this project is strong.

We started this project last August and since then you’ve helped reduce plastic use by refusing more than 4,500 bags at checkout. That’s fantastic!

Together our Blue Bar Quilts community continues to play a role in reducing plastic waste pollution and its environmental impact. Thank you to all customers who elect to use their own shopping bag or who refuse a new one at checkout.

The June winner of our monthly drawing to promote reduction of plastic bag waste is Linda Orr. Linda has won a 4-Fat Quarter Gift Card.

Row by Row 2019:
Taste the Experience

Row by Row is underway and this year’s theme is food!

Our 2019 row and license plate are BBQ themed which seemed like a natural for us since those are our initials!

Our free pattern is titled BBQ Grill, designed by Trish Frankland aka Quilt Chicken. The design was inspired by the classic kettle grill and the simple shapes of modern quilting, our row takes a graphic approach to this year’s food theme. Trish made us this cool, grayscale version, too!

Row by Row Experience is for avid quilters and sewers who love to travel and love to add the next new quilt to their collection. Anyone can participate!

Collect free patterns for themed rows from participating shops all over the US, Canada & Europe. Shops will be distributing their free patterns from June 21 - September 4, 2019.

We hope you will join in the fun!

Bag of the Month with Sew Hungry Hippie:

Bliss Yoga Bag
Instructor: Natalie Santini

Saturday, July 13

Sew a zippered yoga bag with Natalie of Sew Hungry Hippie! We will focus on inserting a main large zipper for fast access to the yoga mat plus two zippered security pockets. I'll show you how to make an adjustable strap, which you can use for any future bag project also.

Natalie writes her patterns with step-by-step photos, directions, diagrams, and digital illustrations so everyone has a successful experience. There are options to customize your best bag as well- such as a vinyl cell phone pocket inside and more! This bag may be sewn with quilting cotton, canvas, duck cloth, vinyl, cork, leather, faux leather, and PU leather. Make sure you have the proper feet to sew if bringing an unconventional material (such as vinyl- you'll need a Teflon foot).

The finished bag measures approx 6.5" diameter x 27" length, however, we can customize this if you need! I do have fat mat dimensions already worked out if you need them. All her patterns go through three rounds of testing by varying levels of sewing experience, including beginner to advanced. Hope to see you in class! Take the skills learned and use them on future bags.

A Study In Big Stitch Quilting: Machine-Pieced, Hand-Quilted

Instructor: Maday Delgado

Saturday, August 3

This Big Stitch workshop will incorporate machine-piecing and Sashiko style hand-stitching. We will improvise to create a machine-pieced panel with assorted fabrics. This panel will be adorned with the rich textured running stitches of Sashiko using colorful threads to give your work dimension and charisma. In addition, our pieced panel will benefit from the unique, spontaneous cuts made with scissors instead of a rotary cutter. These techniques can be a wonderful addition to your current sewing projects ranging from quilts to garments and facilitated in part by the speed of our sewing machines.
