A Challenge to Move Forward and Mend
|
|
Whether we like it or not, pursue it, or avoid it, there have always been quilts and quilters that express political views and ideals. Jacquie Gering made her “Veer” quilt in 2016 to express her concerns over the direction the country was moving and her disappointment in its leadership. It also reaffirmed her commitment to political and community action and to be part of the solution.
Jacquie’s quilt inspired her “Mend” fabric collection from Michael Miller Fabrics. The quilt design is featured as the foundation of the collection with supplementary prints derived from the design of the flag’s starfield and its red and white stripes.
Jacquie’s original quilt speaks to the impact that citizens have on the direction of our country, the responsibilities and obligations of citizenship, and the ability of our country to grow and change for the better. Jacquie added the word MEND to the original design of the veering stripe to encourage all of us to work together to foster the values of compromise, collaboration, and problem-solving. We are sewists and quilters and mending is our superpower. Jacquie wants the collection to provide an opportunity for our community to show the pride we have in our country and the power of its citizenry to work together.
Blue Bar Quilts would like to offer a challenge to our quilting friends to create in the spirit of the Mend message.

"It’s been almost a year since we had our last in-person Make a Blanket Day. We’re sad, and we miss seeing our Blanketeers! The third Saturday in February is designated by Project Linus National as National Make a Blanket Day.
We can’t meet in person, but we can share the day virtually. All you to do to participate is spend some time on Saturday, February 20, working on a blanket for Project Linus. “Working on” could mean anything related to making a Linus blanket: sewing, knitting, planning, cutting fabric, thinking about the next one, etc.
We’re working on having some door prizes available to people who engage in the event that day, and a Facebook room at some point for show and tell, and virtual “hellos.” Check back for details!
Feel free to share this event with your friends. Thanks to everyone who helps make our chapter a success."

Social Justice Sewing Academy
|
|
I am looking with hope to the future and believe that following the lead of our youth will bring progress.
Have you heard about Social Justice Sewing Academy? Founded in 2017, the Social Justice Sewing Academy (SJSA) is a youth education program that bridges artistic expression with activism to advocate for social justice. Through a series of hands-on workshops in schools, prisons and community centers across the country, SJSA empowers youth to use textile art as a vehicle for personal transformation and community cohesion and become agents of social change. Many of their young artists make art that explores issues such as gender discrimination, mass incarceration, gun violence and gentrification. The powerful imagery they create in cloth tells their stories, and these quilt blocks are then sent to volunteers around the world to embellish and embroider before being sewn together into quilts to be displayed in museums, galleries and quilt shows across the country. This visual dialogue bridges differences in race, age and socioeconomics and sparks conversations and action in households across the country.
This year the SJS Academy is excited to launch their 2020 Block of the Month Pattern Series! On the first of each month, they share a FREE pattern or two of a finished block that is inspired by art that youth made in SJSA workshops. Each pattern is designed by a unique quilter, adding their own personal style to each pattern while still encompassing the original youth art ideas or theme for the month. At the end of the year, participants will have the chance to piece these 20 blocks together and make a quilt representing a snapshot of youth inspired SJSA artwork!
For more information on the SJSA and how you can participate in their mission please visit their website: sjsacademy.com.

I am so thankful for your continued business. This international health crisis is going to be a rough patch for so many small businesses and that worries me for all of us in that boat. On the other hand, it has heartened me to see how local communities have rallied in support of their friends and neighbors. May we all remain united in the face of adversity and come through this healthy and happy.
Take care my friends!
