Gwen Marston

The Modern Quilting Community has lost a pioneer and grandmother this week. Gwen Marston was a prolific quilter who authored 31 books on the subject, many with a focus on liberated and collaborative techniques. She taught her craft extensively and hosted an annual retreat at her home on tiny Beaver Island, Michigan for 30 years, each year focused on a particular block style or piecing technique.

Gwen was an innovator of improvisational quilting, nurturing quilters to create original designs rather than follow a pattern to the letter. Gwen will be sorely missed in the quilting world but her legacy will live on through her books and all the quilters she has inspired.
