June is now synonymous with HealthTech Week - the biggest event in NZ’s medtech calendar. If you did not have the chance to attend, these Twitter hashtags can provide a snapshot: #HTWNZ18  #medtechcore18
This event was initially created to celebrate the emerging
medtech industry which is now a $1.5 billion sector. This year’s HealthTech Week demonstrated the substantial growth in NZ-born companies and start-ups; it was great to witness their progress to this point.

Every year, the week brings together the stakeholders interested in health and medical technologies to share knowledge, understand the latest research and innovation underpinning new technologies, and network.
More than 600 people from industry, research, investment and government attended the various 2018 events. Global
giants Amazon and Google described their interest in health while our established NZ companies, Adherium and ableX healthcare provided insights into the challenges that medtech start-ups will face.
The Ministry of Health provided updates on key initiatives, one being the review of our regulatory framework. The new system outlined is principles-based, taking into account health and safety risks, but supporting innovation and will be adaptive to future new technologies. Another key message was on value-based care, central to NZ’s Health Research Strategy. The opportunities and challenges in the use of our health data in this area to develop predictive algorithms and personalise care were discussed.
Technology was acknowledged as an important part of the solution in this narrative if it fulfils a real clinical need and is well designed for its intended application. This is the challenge to industry and research.
